American Weighing continued to produce agricultural equipment until its closure in 1984.
Holly Springs is a small town in North Carolina, located about 25 miles northeast of Charlotte. Holly Springs was founded in 1836 by African Americans who migrated from the then-slave state of Georgia. The community developed around two cotton plantations, one of which was known as "Pine Hill." The area now known as Holly Springs was first settled by Native American people and later became part of the Cherokee Nation. In 1775, English colonists arrived in what is now Holly Springs and established a small fort. In 1836, black Americans who had migrated from Georgia began to settle in the area and name the settlement after their hometowns – Pine Hill for those living near Court House Road, Broadhurst for those east of that road, and Hillsboro for those west of it. The first census taken in Holly Springs listed 1,335 residents. By 1860, the population hadgrown to 2,200 with 179 slaves. A school opened in 1839 and remained open until 1949; an opera house was built in 1865; a grocery store opened in 1870; and a post office was established in 1876. In 1860, following Reconstruction efforts led by President Abraham Lincoln, North Carolina passed an act authorizing African American citizens to own land within its borders. This allowed many blacks to become owners of farms and homes within Holly Springs boundaries. Black businesses thrived during this era including a bakery called "Breadman's Bakery" that ceased operations on account of race riots that broke out throughout the South following America's Civil War (1861-1865). In 1954, when most southern states seceded from the United States pursuant to the Unabomber Act (15 U.S.C § 1591), North Carolina remained among them – becoming one of only six southern states to ratify the segregated interstate commerce clause (which prohibited travel between different racial groups). This exclusion gave local African American residents some degree of self-reliance while maintaining segregationist values across state lines within Northern Virginia/North Carolina society during this period dubbed "Jim Crow". A windmill still stands today on Court House Road just outside town limits; it commercially functions as both a tourist attraction and place where local history can be learned about early white settlers who traveled through town on their way northward during this time period
