Holly Springs, North Carolina is a small town in the eastern part of the U.S. state of North Carolina. It is located on Yadkin River, about 25 miles (40 km) east of Raleigh and 30 miles (48 km) south of Charlotte. The population was 9,883 at the 2010 census.[1] The town is named for Colonel John C. Holly, who had bought land there in 1826 and built a house called Holly Springs after his home county in Ireland. In 1902, the General Assembly renamed Holly Springs "Sprucey Mountain" in honor of Samuel Tilton Sprucey III, then-president of UNC Chapel Hill. The name has been used since then to describe all manner of things within its borders: dairies, golf courses, schools and churches; most recently as the name for a community development corporation that lies within its boundaries but which does not have any municipal government or tax collection powers.[2] As early as 1781 settlers were living in what is now Holly Springs when it became part of English County. By 1800 they had erected two houses—one on present day Elm Street and one on Tryon Street—and started to cultivate crops and raise livestock including hogs and horses. A store was built on Tryon Street by local resident James Caldwell about 1805; later this store become known as Caldwell's General Store which still stands today across from modern day Community Bank headquarters building on Elm Street. One hundred years ago today (January 20th), January 20th will be considered an anniversary Celebrating American Indian Settlement at Hillsborough Plantation where over 640 Cherokee people from seven villages laid down their homes under one roof - establishing what would eventually become Holly Springs Township![3][4]

In 1865, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Holly Springs became part of Union Territory. The post office moved from its original location to a new one near the railroad station in 1867. In 1886, North Carolina annexed Holly Springs from Henderson County to form portions of Durham and Wake counties. After World War II, Holly Springs experienced rapid population growth due to its proximity to Raleigh and otherjob-providing cities. Growth led to increased traffic and pollution problems that destroyed many of the town's historic buildings during the 1970s and 1980s. Today only a few remnant houses remain standing in what once was one of North Carolina's most thriving small towns
Holly Springs was a small town located in central North Carolina, in the counties of Cabarrus and Hyde. The original Holly Springs post office was established on November 12, 1892. The name may be derived from the Holly tree which is found near the town's borders.
The first settlers in Holly Springs were Methodists from Scotland who arrived around 1814. They built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1825, Reverend John McMaster purchased land east of the original cabin and started a day school for teachers and their students. In 1830, he donated 180 acres (71 hectares) to the Methodist Episcopal Church for use as an agricultural college. The college opened its doors in 1830 under the name "Morganton Female College". A year later, Reverend McMaster donated another 120 acres (49 hectares) to build a new campus called "Holly Springs Institute" which became one of the largest training schools for women in America. This campus housed both primary and secondary education until it closed its doors in 1959 due to budget cuts by then-Governor Meredith Johnson.
