Holly Springs is a small town in eastern North Carolina, United States. The population was 6,072 at the 2010 census. Holly Springs is the parish seat of Newton County and is located on the main thoroughfare of U.S. Route 421, just south of Raleigh. It was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1829 as a post office called "Newton" after John Newton, an early settler. The first post office in Holly Springs was established on July 24, 1829, by General James Harnett and named for his daughter Holly Hill near Knoxville, Tennessee. In 1830 the name was changed to "Newton", honoring General Nathaniel Newton who had served with distinction during the American Revolution and under President George Washington as deputy quartermaster general. In 1836 the post office moved from Newton to what is now known as "Holly Springs". At that time it included all present day areas of Newton County except what are now Cary and Durham Counties to the east and west respectively; these counties were formed in 1839 when Johnston County was created from parts of Wake and Durham Counties. After being renamed "Holly Springs" for several years during which time no mail arrived there due to Indian hostilities (the last such attack occurred on November 25, 1838), it became an official US Postal Service community on May 12, 1949 when it joined Raleigh's ZIP Code 92534
