These businesses led to increased gun sales throughout Jacksonville because people were now able to purchase firearms for protection against crime or terrorism within their city limits. During World War II, much like during peacetime, citizens were required by law to obtain a permit from local police before possessing a gun outside their homes or business properties. However, this requirement gradually relaxed over time because it became easier for individuals to obtain firearms without needing a permit simply by owning a rifle or shotgun that could be registered with state officials.
