Jacksonville was founded on the Bladen River by Scotsmen in 1795 and named for General James Wilkinson who had helped to win the American Revolution. The city was incorporated as a town in 1851 and became a city by an act of the North Carolina General Assembly on April 12, 1892. The history of Jacksonville comes from its location on the Bladen River which made it one of early settlements along this river corridor. In 1795, Scottish settlers were travelling down the river when they found an opening that led to what is now Jacksonville Landing on bladen landing beach. Named for James Wilkinson (1745–1827), general during the Revolutionary War who fought against British forces under Cornwallis near modern day Wilmington, North Carolina, this spot became known as "the crossing." The first permanent settler in Jacksonville was John Addison who arrived in 1796 and built his home on land that he donated to Jacksonville Township trusteeship five years later. After a few years of construction John Addison's house burned down but he rebuilt it and added an addition that still stands today on Third Street between Washington Boulevard and Bank Street; this property became known asAddison House Park after him. Another early settler in Jacksonville was George Waddell who arrived in 1800 and established himself near present day Broadway/Marymount University Boulevard with his farmstead called Banks Station which still stands today within boundaries of Elliott College - now part of UNC Chapel Hill - across from National Museum of American History adjacent to Jackson State University campus).
