Kannapolis is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina and the seat of Campbell County. The population was 21,793 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg metropolitan area and is located on Lake Norman. Kannapolis was founded by General John Cotesworth Pinckney in 1796 as an unincorporated community on what is now State Route 97. The two men agreed that Kannapolis would be named for Catlett's father, also called Gouverneur Catlett, then a general in British Honduras who had fought against Spanish forces at San Miguel de Allende during the Mexican War (1846-48). By 1889, local citizens had erected a brick courthouse and other buildings near present-day Court Square; by 1893, they had completed streetscape changes that made Kannapolis one of the most attractive towns in North Carolina. In 1894–95, Catlett endowed $5 million towards various civic improvements throughout north central NC including enlarging School District #9 from 12 schools to 24 schools with new facilities at Fourth Street and University Avenue NW; also that year construction began on High school building which still stands today at 301 W Main St., across from High School Arena
