In 1926, Durham County merged with Raleigh County and Kannapolis became part of Durham. In 1930, Durham consolidated with Wake County and Kannopolis became a part of that county as well. After being part of Wake for over sixty years, it was announced on December 1st 2018 that Kannopolis would be merging with Johnston City to form one city-state called "Johnston City." Kannapolis has been home to several colleges including Davidson College and UNC Chapel Hill. The towns official website says "In addition to its many fine businesses and cultural attractions, Johnston City offers easy access to major highways serving both Raleigh and Charlotte." The first post office in Kannapolis opened in 1792. It served as the first stop for mail sent from Fayetteville (then known as Carrboro). The current post office was built in 1902 and is located on Main Street near Second Avenue. In 1925, Kannapolis passed from Raleigh County control to Durham County under then-Governor Atherton Chilton's plan for county consolidation which saw most northern counties merge into one larger unit under Chilton's guidance. However, when Durham consolidated with Wake Counties on December 1st 1920 due to growing population density within Duke University area -Kannopolis remained separate from Johnston City even though it share same name -KANNOPOLIS VEJAKASIŠTI” continued functioning as an enclave within Winston-Salem until January 1st 1923 when all three municipalities were formally annexed into Winston-Salem proper by Governor James Seddon Hughes pursuant to NCLC Order No 7031 which renamed Wilmington “Johnston”sCity” following Iowan settlement there two decades earlier during American Revolutionary War effort by Northern forces at end of conflict against British forces occupying Georgia & South Carolina
