In 1951, Mr. and Mrs. Caryl Easley donated additional land to make way for what would become South Park Elementary School; that addition became home to Eastside High School in 1974 after being vacated by South Park Middle School which closed during the 1970s demographic shift associated with Raleigh's suburban growth). In 2002, Mrs. Evelyn Webb Donahue giftedadditional land to make way for what would become Westside Intermediate/Secondary Schools; that addition became home to Christmastown Middle School which opened its doors in 2006 following Chapel Hill's closure of its middle school system due to budget cuts announced by then Governor Bev Perdue during her final year in office Knightdale is also home to two community colleges: Catawba Community College and Davidson County Technical College which share space at Catawba Valley Mall across from Catawba Valley High School (KPBC-TV). Both colleges offer associate degree programs as well as vocational training opportunities such as welding and carpentry According to the 2000 census, there were 704 people living here who identified themselves as "Hispanic or Latino", 505 of whom were Spanish speakers . Of those Hispanics or Latinos living here, 536 were age 25 or younger . There are also a number of non-Hispanic white residents who identify themselves this way: 281 live here who are age 25 or younger Knightsdale is located on Yadkin River where many interesting events have taken place including boat races on the riverbanks throughout summertime along with concerts at various venues like Union Presbyterian Church and other smaller churches throughout town
