The name "Knightdale" was given to the town by Colonel Henderson's brother James who had settled there in 1781 as a result of the Revolutionary War victory over British forces at Saratoga Springs, New York. In 1835, Ulysses S Grant served as governor of North Carolina for three terms, including one term as military governor of Rutherford County under then-President Andrew Johnson. When Grant left office in 1877, he moved to Greensboro which became his home until his death in 1901.. Grants wife Lucy died here also in 1901. In 1922 Cary Middleton bought much of what remains today of Knightdale Square from Colonel Henderson's heirs and renamed it Middleton Park after him and his wife Lucy’s daughter Cary Middleton Laneigelder who had married him there that year In 1957 when Interstate 95 was built through eastern Rutherford County it ran through parts of Middleton Park concurrent with US 15/US 421 passing just south of it cutting off access to Knightdale Square from Middleton Park making it less populated than ever before . After I95 bypassed middleton park all traces of knightdaler were gone

Knightdale's history began with Colonel John Sibley, who came to Durham Township in 1854 to purchase land for his farmstead and begin development of what would become Knightdale. At first, Sibley only offered day labor to help build the homes of local farmers and traders; however, over time he became known for his quality produce and fine architecture which has been perpetuated through today's residents. In 1860, Colonel Sibley married Anna Bryant and within three years had born four children: James W., Anna L., Edwin A., and Clara C.. In 1865 Anna Bryant gave birth to her final child -a girl -named Ethel M.. By 1870 Ethel M.'s father had died leaving her mother impoverished so she took up residence with her brother James W.(pictured) until her husband got married again six years later and moved away from Knightdale altogether. In 1898 two local men -Frank Broughton(pictured)and Roy Bedell(pictured)came up with the idea of building a public library downtown which would serve as an important community resource for all citizens regardless of economic status or social standing. The $1,500 they raised allowed them to build the library on West Main Street which opened its doors on November 6th, 1998 having cost $4300 total。 After more than 50 years of hard work by many people including many Knights of Columbus members who donated their time or money; Knightdale has become one of the most vibrant communities in Wake County!
