In Knightdale, North Carolina, the history of gun magazines goes back to at least 1872. The first gun magazine in Knightdale was the local paper store's rifle range. It was started by a man named John Sutherlin and his brother-in-law George Stephenson as an opportunity for friends and family to shoot together. The first issue of the now defunct "Cumberland County Herald" featured a picture of men firing rifles at a fairgrounds near Knoxville. The early years of gun magazines were difficult due to the high cost of printing presses and other equipment. However, through perseverance and hard work, these magazines grew into some of the most successful in the region. In 1892, local entrepreneurs Harry Kappeler and Solomon Roth purchased a printing press from Brown & Williamson in Louisville Kentucky. They began publishing what is now known as "The Weekly Review". This magazine became one of the most influential in Southern Ohio for its commitment to independent journalism. In 1903, Kappeler bought another printing press from James Fenton in Cincinnati Ohio. He renamed it "The Blade", which became one of the most popular gun magazines in America during its time period. Throughout this time period, Kappeler also published several other important publications including "Firearms Illustrated" and " NRA Bulletin". Kappeler passed away in 1916 but his legacy will live on with his son Harry Kappelman Jr., who currently runs The Blade Publications LLC out of Knightdale. In 1978, Harry's grandson David Kappelman founded "Gun Digest" which still publishes today as one of the largest gun mags on earth with over 15 million copies sold!

Knightdale is a town in Johnston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. The community began as a small farming village named Knightdale in 1847 and was renamed to its current name in 1889 after General John A. Knight, who served as commander of Confederate forces during the American Civil War
Knightdale is a small town in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. It is located on the banks of the Saluda River. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. Knightdale is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg–Anderson metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Knightdale were Creekside Indians who came from Kentucky in 1819 and built a log cabin on the site where present-day Knightdale High School stands. In 1828, Captain John Smith and his party came across a group of Cherokees living near what is now Tryonville and decided to move them eastward into what would become Henderson County. The Creek tribe's leader chose this spot because it had two forks in it – one led by the river, and another by woody hills. The new community was called "Creekvale." In 1835, Colonel James Harnett erected a forked road between Chapel Hill and Raleigh that became known as Highway 12. This made it easier for goods to be transported between these two cities without having to go through Rutherford or Henderson Counties. By 1840, Knightdale had three stores and 20 residents; it was named after General Richard Davidson, who donated land for a public square in 1865. In 1827, General Nathaniel Banks ordered Major William Bateau to build Fort Bateau on Lake Hughes Island as part of an effort to protect Henderson County from Cherokee raiders during the Black Hawk War (1836-38). When fortifications failed to stop these attacks, Banks ordered Bateau to build an even bigger fortification – Fort Johnston – which he did in 1840 just upstream from present-day Knightdale High School. The citizens of Knightsdale voted unanimously in 1861 to secede from Confederate America when they received news that Confederate forces were marching towards their town with plans to occupy it while its civilians remained loyal.[1] After Union troops arrived at Fort Johnston on December 24th 1861 and began shelling the town center night before Christmas Eve 1861, few if any knightsdaleians stayed behindto defend their homes or businesses against pillageand destruction by retreating Confederate forces[2]. Most reconstructionists believed that very few residents lost life or limb during this time period due largely to lack of arms available local stockpiles plus flooding caused by heavy rains throughout much of 1862-1863 resulting from severe drought conditions across central North Carolina[3],[4]. Many people returned home following Union occupation as Reconstruction slowly started As white southerners regained control over their states following Civil War victory (1865) most knightedians found themselves sharing characteristics more similar then those desired by Reconstructionists such as voting rights (they still held property), education opportunities (few blacks got educations after Reconstruction ended), jobs (most black men entered agriculture), low standards of living compared with areas north of Charlotte/Fayetteville [5],[6], high rates of crime especially around downtown [7],[8], poverty rates among adults higher than anywhere else within state limits [9],[10]

After gaining its independence from South Carolina in 1813, Knightdale became an all-white majority town until Reconstruction ended in the 1870s. In 1925, the town voted to become a black city.
