It is located on the border of Rutherford and Moore Counties, east of Raleigh. The first Europeans to visit the area were traders looking for new markets for their goods. A post office called Knightdale was established in 1827, and mail arrived from England twice a week at that time. In 1851, James Wilson founded what is now known as Wilson's Mills in what is now Knightdale. That year he also built a cabin on the current site of Knightdale Elementary School. A sawmill was constructed on the same site in 1865 by Elijah Murchison and it continued operating until 1975. In 1887, a store was built near present-day Old Main Street and Court Avenue; this store remained open until 1974 when it closed because of health concerns caused by chemical runoff from nearby manufacturing plants.

However, until 1875 there was no government within Rutherford County; all residents were dependent upon the local governments of Wake and Durham counties for services such as education and law enforcement. This changed when Rutherford County commissioners met to create an executive branch which would provide more centralized governance for the county when it formed within statehood in 1875. In 1876*, King Rancho de las Palmas – now known as Spring Hill – became a part of Knightsdale when its owner John Swayze donated 640 acres (250 hectares) of land east of downtown to the community for development into agriculturaleland.* subsequent purchases from Swayze led to other acreage being given away over time including much of present-day South Knoxville neighborhood.* In 1907 William Hargrave donated 801 acres (370 hectares) further east on East Main Street* resulting in today’s Hillcrest subdivision*. Over time new families have join later additions including those who purchased land around Highland Park which totaled 2,827 acres by 1990* making it one of North Carolina’s largest parcels ever sold at auction *. Today homes sit on vast tracts located near Interstate 85 * making it one of America’s most valuable rural towns *. Knightdale has been inhabited by humans since early Paleolithic times*. Excavations at nearby Fort Sumter National Monument have discovered evidence that Paleo-Indians hunted game here including mammoths*, mastodons*, deer*, beavers* and even cave bears*. As early as 1000 BC people had constructed shell middens here indicative of an intense trade relationship with Southeast Asia*. By 1009 AD European explorers had begun presence in this area with Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León reported seeing “a great city rising out from behind some woods about two leagues distant from our house” . In 1558 English forces sacked Raleigh during the Second Anglo-Spanish War (*see alsoattack on Raleigh), leaving little evidence remaining except for fragments unearthed over time.* The site remained unoccupied until 1685 when Colonel Thomas Hyde proposed founding a military post here due to its strategic location midway between Raleigh and Wilmington*(*See also Fort Raleigh). The post was eventually renamed Johnstontown(*See also Johnston). Unfortunately this proposal fell through because Governor Edmund Ruffin refused permission because he believed that Johnstontown should be situated closer to Wilmington so that troops could better protect that city against Confederate attacks *. After significant skirmishes surrounding several locations throughout eastern North Carolina duringthe American Revolution (*see Battlefields Of America), General George Washington finally arrived at Fort Johnston on December 13th off Monckton Island (*Harrisonburg*)nearpresent day Knightdale just before Christmas 1777†(*See also Battle Of Monckton Island ). After engaging in numerous hand-to-hand combat with Native Americans along the way Washington ordered his men construct defensiveworks which included earth ramparts and stockades across fourteen miles (24 kilometers)*(*Fort Donelson ) . From these fortifications General Washington repelled three assaults by Confederate forces commanded by Major General James Wilkinson†(*At Kettle River ). Despite this impressive victory over high value enemy combatants * seealso Battle Of Monckton Island ),Washington decided not to stay long enough to claim victory or build another fortification*( See also Treaty Of Paris ). The community grew quickly, and in 1800, they built a courthouse and school. In 1828, they added a church to the community. By 1850, the population of Knightdale had increased to 2,000 people. However, during the American Civil War, many of the residents took up arms against the Union forces. Some of these soldiers turned on their own families and local businesses when they realized that money was being taken from them for supplies and services needed by their comrades-in-arms. As a result of this conflict, many homes were destroyed or damaged, and most of the town's infrastructure was destroyed as well. The town slowly recovered after the war but still faced some challenges such as poor roads and limited resources which made it difficult for people to get around easily. However, over time Knightdale has seen gradual growth with more businesses opening up and more people moving into its neighborhoods.
