Since then, Knightdale has undergone numerous rename changes, including Hendersonville (1932-1965), Charlotte (1976-1981), Raleigh (1982-1983), Cary (1984-1988), Durham (1989-1995), Chapel Hill (1996-1998) and Durham again (1999). It is now known as part of Chapel Hill/Chapel Hill County. The origins of Knightdale can be traced back to 1796 when white settlers began arriving in what is now Chapel Hill County. At first they established small villages near present day downtown Chapel Hill, but soon realized that their land would not support them alone and decided to establish a new community on poorer soil just outside of town limits. They named their newcommunity Fort Knightdale after General James Edward Smith who had commanded British forces during the American Revolution. The original fort was destroyed by fire in 1813 but was rebuilt two years later and became an important garrison for South Carolina during the war years. Knightdale was founded in 1819 by General George Washington and his aide, Colonel James Wilkinson. It was named after Knight's Creek, a tributary of the Yadkin River. The first settlers in the area were Quakers who had come tojoin other religious groups in North Carolina during the American Revolution. In 1828, Knightdale became part of Union County, which included Raleigh and Chapel Hill. In 1861, Confederate forces attacked Union troops at Fort Sumter in South Carolina and resulting Civil War began. On November 12 of that year, Union General John Buford surrendered at Appomattox Court House with about 8,000 men dead or wounded. Knightdale residents supported the Union cause and many moved to Virginia or other states during the war. The end of the Civil War left much reconstruction work to be done in North Carolina including education for black citizens as well as rebuilding homes and businesses destroyed by war. As Reconstruction went on, Knightsdale experienced more economic prosperity than most areas throughout the state because of its location near railroads and other industry. Beginning in the early 1920s, Knightsdale attracted new people from all over North Carolina looking for a warmer climate and opportunities for education and business growth. Today, Knightdale is home to a wide variety of cultural events such as art exhibitions and music festivals that bring people together from around the region.
