Laurinburg is a small town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,792 at the 2010 census. Laurinburg is named after General James Longstreet, who fought in the American Revolution and also served as Governor of North Carolina from 1792-1796. The first settler in Laurinburg was John Dallam and his family who came around 1814. Mr. Dallam's brother, Robert Dallam founded the town on land that he purchased from the Cherokees. The town was originally called "Dalston" because of its location near Dalston Creek. In 1835, John Sibley donated land to build a school which became known as Sibley Academy; later renamed as Davidson College (now Wake Forest University). In 1865, when Alamance County was created from parts of neighboring Durham County, Laurinburg became part of the new county and lost its status as a small town. However, it regained its importance when railroads were built through Alamance and Orange counties and began to ship goods and people to Charlotte along railroad tracks. This increased traffic led to an increase in business for businesses such as stores and restaurants located throughout Laurinburg; many now still exist today including the iconic White Castle restaurant on State Route 252 just south of town limits. In 1907–1908, local resident Julius Hargrave started a small paper mill that continues operation today; however production ceased due to economic conditions during World War II when mills were converted into housing projects or turned into munitions factories by the war effort. After the war ended, Laurinburg experienced an influx of refugees coming from various parts of South Asia due to partitioning of India; most notably Indian immigrants Satish Chandra Bose (a Hindu) and Mohandas Gandhi (Acharya).
