The townsite was first settled by Scots-Irish and English colonists in the early 1800s, and became a significant center of slave trading. In 1828, Lincolnton incorporated as a city. Lincolnton has experienced various waves of population growth over its history, including a peak in 1980 when it had a population of 30,000. Today, Lincolnton is a small community with an approximate population of 10 to 12 thousand people. Lincolnton's prominence as an economic center began shortly after its incorporation as a city; it became one of the leading cotton plantations in North Carolina beginning in the 1830s. In addition to its production capacity, Lincolnton also played an important role as a transportation hub for goods arriving from eastern North Carolina and southern Virginia via railroads and boats. By 1860, however, textile mills had displaced many cotton farmers in central and easternNorth Carolina; Lincolton's economy slowly declined thereafter until reaching its current level only since the late 1990s when new mill development has returned it to some degree of prosperity. Today Lincolnton is home to several local businesses including Banks Family Farms ice cream company which makes three flavors: mintchip Sundae; raspberry ripple pie; blackberry berry tart; Custard Pie Company provides frozen custard products for restaurants throughout easternNorth Carolina.; Phillips Pharmacy chain operates five stores throughout central NC.;and two convenience stores serve residents within walking distance of each other.. The extensive collection of period donated items housed at Gadsden County Museum includes items dating back to colonial times through early 19th century United States History such as farm tools used by earlier settlers along with furniture from before independence such as chairs salvaged from Yanceyville Plantation., African American dolls made between 1850-1860 are on display inside museum along with clothing worn during Reconstruction era

The first settler in Lincolnton was George Washington who founded the town in 1792. The town grew rapidly and by 1825, it had a population of over 100 people. Lincolnton became a stop on the Underground Railroad during the Civil War because many slaves were fleeing to North Carolina from South Carolina. After the war, Lincolnton developed into an agricultural center with large plantations that produced cotton, rice, and other crops. In 1865, Lincolnton was renamed Winston-Salem after President Abraham Lincoln's visit to the state.
