Lincolnton is a small town located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina. The population was 3,869 at the 2010 census and it is part of the Asheville, NC metropolitan area. It lies adjacent to Buncombe County on one side and Mecklenburg County on the other. Lincolnton has been inhabited by people since Paleo-Indian times. The first European to visit Lincolnton was Captain John Smith in 1606. In 1819, President James K. Polk asked General Gouverneur Morris if he could find any place where he might station troops for protection during his invasion of South Carolina. General Morris refused because Lincolnton lay within Buncombe County and not Mecklenburg County as mandated by law; however, Lincolnton residents voted to secede from Buncombe County in 1870 and incorporation as a city occurred that year. In 1876, Lincolton’s first stone courthouse was built on what is now Main Street (Upper High Street today). This building served as the town’s seat until 1889 when a new courthouse was constructed on Baptist Hill which still stands today. The old courthouse burned down in 1906 but was rebuilt using slave labor and opened to traffic in 1909. In 1907, Drury Lane Theatre opened its doors as the world’s first movie theater west ofthe Allegheny Mountains Meredith Willson sang her famous song “I Believe” at this theater before it closed its doors for good in 1949 after serving over 50 years commercially and aesthetically throughout much of central North Carolina including Charlotte, Raleigh/Durham, Fayetteville/Springdale, Chapel Hill/New Hanover/Aiken etc.). A new Drury Lane Theatre opened its doors on Meeting Street just north of downtown Ashevile in 2013 which continues to serve as an iconic venue for local & regional theatre events along with hosting Broadway plays each season including “The Sunshine Boys” starring Neil Patrick Harris and Tony winner Zac Efron originated here! The town began to grow rapidly after construction of a railroad connection in 1870 and new businesses were opened. In 1876, Lincolnton became one of the original towns in North Carolina. The town's growth continued until World War II when it was destroyed by fire. Today, portions of Lincolnton are still preserved as part of the local community and history museum which is open to the public.

In 1814, Lincolnton became the seat of government for Johnston County and remained so until 1926.Today, Lincolnton is a small town located about 15 miles northwest of Raleigh.
