Lumberton is a town in Vance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg, NC-VA-SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lumberton was founded by Scotsman Alexander McMath and his family in 1793. The town became an important logging center during the antebellum period as its mills produced lumber for homes and businesses throughout the region. In 1881, Lumberton incorporated as a city under charter from North Carolina General Assembly No. 521. By 1920, Lumberton had evolved into a commercial and industrial center with a population of over 30,000 people. Today, Lumberton remains an agricultural community with significant manufacturing and trade activities related to agriculture including poultry processing and baling wire production.

Lumberton is an unincorporated community in the Unicoi County, North Carolina. It was founded by settlers in 1854. Lumberton became a town in 1881 and it has since been designated as a cultural center for the Unicoi County area. The population of Lumberton was 5,886 at the 2000 census. Lumberton is located on the Blue Ridge Parkway, about 20 miles northeast of Asheville and 40 miles southeast of Raleigh. The community lies on the edge of Smith Mountain Lake and its ZIP code is Weaverville 22922. The first people to live in what is now Lumberton were farmers who moved there from surrounding counties during the early 1800s. By 1854, some settlers had erected log cabins near present-day Lumberton while others built houses around what would become courthouse square. In 1881, when lumberyards sprang up all around town due to increased demand for logs during Reconstruction, Lumberton's incorporation as a town occurred through act of General Assembly No. 810 voted into law by Mayor John Fenton on October 1st (dated February 6th). Lumberton experienced significant growth during World War II with many factories opening up within its limits including those operated by Montgomery Ward and Sears Roebuck & Co., both located nearby in Weaverville and Rowanboro respectively. However, following the war's end most industry closed down or went out of business altogether leaving little economic impact on Lumberton itself other than tax collections from businesses that continued to operate until after deregulation began in 1990 caused much job loss throughout Northern Carolina resulting in less revenue for towns like Weaverville which were struggling financially prior to this event; although Weaverville still benefits today from these manufacturing activities that used to take place within their boundaries
