Woodward built a cabin on what is now Main Street and named it Loggerstown after himself and his wife Elizabeth (née Mason). Over time other settlers followed suit including John Crouse who founded Crouse's Mill in 1830; James Aiken who settled around 1836; Amos Sawyer who platted what is now downtown Lumberton in 1840; and Elisha Purdy who opened a store at present day Main Street in 1849. In 1865, when Raleigh-Durham Consolidated Railroad reached Lumberton through nearby Ashley Parish then Buncombe County, lumbermen flocked to its new mill townsite for work quarrying coal from Charlotte Mountains National Park northeast of town proper. By 1870 many homes had been erected along Loggerstown Road within sight of what would become downtown Lumberton – including one built by local physician Drury Swayne that still stands today as an important landmark of the community center district known today as Midtown Lofts/Mall Districts Q1 & Q2 development area which fronts mainstreet between Main & Tryon Streets]. This early growth can be partially attributed to railroads providing jobs for men during construction projects such as bridges or ditches while also tapping into demand for goods exported from southern states munitions factories or textile mills across Interstate 40 highway corridor connecting NC central business district with PointsSouth industrial market located just south of I-40 exit ramp on SR 540 about 21 miles west of Asheville Airport) .
