Lumberton was founded in 1795 by George Washington and is the oldest town in North Carolina. The area that Lumberton occupies today was first settled by the Cherokee, who were forced to leave their homes during the American Revolution. Lumberton became a center forManufacturing because of its location on the Catawba River. After the war, lumber companies began to relocate their operations to this area and trade goods with Native Americans using what is now known as Lumberton Road. The first gun safe company in Lumberton was built in 1820 by John Ritchie and it continued operation until 1838. In 1845, James Waddell built his first gun safe company in nearby Winston-Salem and it continued business until 1851. Then, Methodists began trading with Cherokee Indians using what is now known as Mill Creek Drive. This trade led to the construction of a new gun safe company called Mechanicall & Brown at 515 N Tryon Street in 1857. The firm continued business until 1861 when it moved to 376 N Market Street where it remains today. In 1865, General William Tecumseh Sherman visited Lumberton and ordered all guns be destroyed from all local arsenals except for those needed for military purposes. In 1898, an amusement park called Crystal Beach opened up near Lumberton and over time many businesses followed suit including a movie theater (1927), grocery store (1948), post office (1964), bank (1981), barbershop (1991) and more! In 2001, Hurricane Floyd made landfall near Lumberton causing extensive damage including $8 million worth of damages to businesses within just one day! However, despite these setbacks, over 60 years later “Lumbernton has become one of America’s most vibrant small towns” due not only to its rich history but also its preserved infrastructure such as its historic buildings and streetscapes!

Lumberton’s growth was due to its central location within easy reach of both Greensboro and Winston-Salem; its excellent transportation connections through railroads; and its strategic location between two major trade routes – the Harriman Railroad corridor to north east and west and Interstate 20 to south east – making it an important commercial center throughout much of northeastern North Carolina during this time period. In 1892, lumberman John Aiken donated $10,000 towards construction of a new Methodist Episcopal church in Lumberton which served as both community center and religious education facility until 1959 when it was replaced by Piedmont Presbyterian Church. Although initially small in size, over time Lumberton exploded with growth due largely to its rich natural resources: virgin timberlands stretching from downtown into rolling hillsides nearby; coal reserves totaling more than 100 million tons dating back centuries; uranium deposits near present day Hickory Hill Road; oil prospects off Highway 412 near present day Mockingbird Lake; and water rights situated along many streams that provide essential irrigation for agriculture throughout much of northeast North Carolina during this time period. During World War II local farmers produced food items such as Victory Holes Beef Jerky which reached USAAF airfields all across North Carolina postwar because demand was high following victory over Japan In 1945 local residents raised money through bake sales/pancakes/pie auctions/etc., collectedWar Bonds etc., then placed them into cream canisters found at various locations around town so they could be delivered directlyto military bases all over America via truck! In 1957 Piedmont Presbyterian Church burned down leaving little evidence remaining except 4 large logs left leaning against a tree near Main Street where people used to gather before services each morning or night! Lumberton is a town in Carteret County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. Lumberton is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Lumberton were Methodists from Scotland who came overland in 1814. They founded a logging settlement on the Catawba River near present-day Blue Ridge Parkway and named it after their Scottish bishop, Robert Lumbert. Logging continued for several years but then stopped because of lack of available trees. In 1838, Scotsman James Caldwell settled in what is today Lumberton and began to log with his brother John Caldwell. The brothers built a mill on the Pee Dee River which they operated until 1865 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1868, George Harnett bought the mill and operations continued until 1905 when he sold it to J A Marriott Sr., owner of Wacoal USA Incorporated (now known as Marriott International). In 1925, Marriott constructed the first air conditioning unit in America at his mill which still operates today as an exhibit within Wacoal's corporate headquarters complex called "The Marriott." A year later, J C Hardesty purchased the mill from Marriott and continued operations until 1969 when he sold it to John Mercer who also owned Checker Mfg Co., a local fabricator. In 1984, Mercer donated the mill to Carteret County for use as an Agricultural Extension Service office facility; however, due to budget cuts at Carteret County government (particularly during World War II), only acreage for storage remained after operation ceased in 1991. Today there are few if any visible reminders of former lumbering days; most notable being that one side of town has been designated "Lumberton Heritage Park" where visitors can explore both extant mills buildings as well as pioneer homes that once stood within walking distance of both mills dating back to around 1800 BC! As mentioned earlier - much like many other American towns during this time - lumbering was gradually replaced by other industries such as textile production following increased cotton production throughout central North Carolina throughout this period making trade between these states increasingly difficult or impossible without traveling downriver all the way to Charlotte/or Raleigh/Franklinburg where goods could be bought and sold! It wasn't until 1924 that WacoalUSAincorporated made its first trip downstream from its original source on High Street just north of downtown Durham into what would become known as NC $ ($) territory before opening its doors finally becoming incorporated federally under US  law with offices located just off I-95 outside Raleigh! As we know now given current economic conditions - even sizable chunks of rural America like Lumberton have seen little or no progress whatsoever since those good ol' days...mostly because people here just don't feel inclined or motivated enough anymore either!)
