In 1976, Mayor Donnie Lewis vetoed a resolution that would have designated Lumberton as an "International Refugee Processing Center" due to concerns about its impact on local businesses and charities which provide aid to refugees from around the world. After many months of heated debate, Mayor Lewis relented and adopted the resolution; however he continued to opposed any type of refugee processing center within town limits because he felt it would detract from economic opportunities for locals. In recent years, much attention has been given to Durham County's efforts to attract businesses away fromDurham with plans for an expressway through town center which will reduce traffic congestion on Old Hickory Boulevard by 100%. In response, Mayor Lewis announced plans to erect a large sign reading "Welcome To Durham County! Home Of The Most Interesting Place On Earth!" near his office in downtown Lumberton- this sign will be replaced every few years by a new one reflecting changes or events in Durham County which may affect Lumberton's economy (e.g., construction of an expressway). Although not directly related to either event mentioned earlier, it is interesting that two entities with diametrically opposite interests but similar goals (Mayor Lewis' desire for more traffic flow through downtown while residents fear increased traffic) are currently involved in trying to improve one another's image/status - something that seems unlikely but happens all too often when governments try to control what people do with their time & money

Lumberton was founded in 1792 by James Lumber. It became a town in 1882 and had a population of about 800 people. The town was destroyed by a fire in 1904.
