In 1903, the name changed to "Matthews" after James S. Matthews, an American delegate from North Carolina to the International Cotton Conventions of 1913 and 1916. The town's growth began during World War II when thousands of soldiers came here for work on munitions plants or elsewhere in the war effort. After the war ended, many residents left for other towns or counties because they found no job opportunities hereafter. However, over time some have returned and continue to live here while others have sold their homes and moved away again. Matthewstown has always been a small town with only about 350 residents although it has grown larger due to annexations that have taken place throughout Forsyth County since 2000; these annexations gave Matthews an additional square mile (1 km2) of land which made it possible for it to grow even more quickly than its original boundaries allowed!
