Mebane, North Carolina is a small town in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It is located on the border of Dare County and Pittsylvania County. Mebane was founded in 1792 by Colonel John Mebane, who named it for General Mebane, who had fought in the Revolutionary War. The population of Mebane was 1,291 at the 2000 census. Mebane is a primarily agricultural town with some manufacturing and retail businesses. The primary economic activity here has been agriculture until recent years when tourism has become an important part of the community's economy. The Moncrief Brewing Company produces craft beer that can be found in most convenience stores throughout eastern North Carolina as well as online at www.moncriefbrewingco.com and select liquor stores across the state. Mebane also boasts several tennis tournaments each year including one held in late July/early August which brings together top-ranked professional players from around the United States to compete against each other at two different venues; one outdoors (the Tennis Club) and one indoor (the High School). There have also been several golf tournaments hosted here over time including both amateur and professional levels; however, this may be changing soon as a new business venture called iGolf plans to open up a golf course on Oak Park Road just outside of Mebane proper within the next few years! As for education, there are three schools in town: Our Lady’s Preparatory School (grades Pre-K through 8), Bridgeport Middle School (9-12), and Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary School (1-4). Mebane, North Carolina is a small town in Haywood County, North Carolina. It was founded by white settlers in 1838 and named for Major General James Mebane. The community has a population of about 1,500 people today. Mebane is located on the Yadkin River just east of its confluence with the Catawba River. The river was once a major water source for the town and provides drinking water to many residents. The town also has a large pond where local businesses dump dirty raw sewage effluent from their operations. Mebane is strategically important because it lies at the junction of two major road routes in Haywood County - US-421 and NC-521. This makes it an important commercial center for the area, as well as providing access to other nearby towns and villages. The town's rich history can be found starting with its founding date – August 1838 – which is significantgiven that many early settlers were recently freed slaves who had been brought to Haywood County by planters looking for new land to settle. Mebane became one of the first black communities in Haywood County when it was officially founded on October 12th, 1838 by African Americans working together with whites under joint supervision under the leadership of Captain John Fenton and First Lieutenant Isaac Hightower. The group bypassed earlier planned settlements such as Hendersonville due to lack of space or interest among white farmers who were instead focused on developing newer areas in central Cumberland County. In fact, only one building in Mebane remained standing from when it was first established until 1966 when it burned down during a storm damage assessment project led by then Mayor Dexter Lunsford: "In those days there really wasn't anything much going on here," Lunsford said at the time recalling how he supervised restoration efforts following Hurricane Floyd which damaged most of downtown Raleigh). As part of Reconstruction Era South Carolina, citizens working alongside federal troops helped rebuild Mebane after acreage taken away from blacks following Reconstruction was redistributed into Union territory (the process known as "redevelopment"). Many African Americans who had been driven out of their homes returned home during this time period; some even resumed work on farms they had left behind while others started small businesses specializing in agriculture or business services provided by white men thanks to government assistance programs like mainframe computers and office machines that arrived shortly afterwards courtesy of US Secretaryof War Edwin Stanton's Morrill Act program (also known as New Deal). According through these programs thousands more black men entered professional jobs throughout southern United States including educationally via Tuskegee Institute; industrially via steel mills run by companies like GEICO; artistically via Jackson Pollock’s studio near Ebenezer Baptist Church; etc.), thus reinforcing social cohesion within larger black American populations." Mebane is named for Major General Nathaniel Mebane (1792-1860), who fought in the Mexican-American War and was discharged from the U.S. Army at its conclusion because of his injuries.
