Mint Hill is a small town in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, located on the banks of the Elizabeth River. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Mint Hill is home to Colonial Revival and Queen Anne architecture, as well as a variety of shops and restaurants. It is also known for its annual Fourth of July parade which takes place down Main Street. Mint Hill was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1736. The name comes from a hill in nearby Surry County that served as a mint for years during British rule in North Carolina. In 1812, Governor Tryon renamed Mint Hill after his sister, Charlotte Forbes Tryon (1772-1847). Charlotte Forbes Tryon had been born in Scotland to Scottish parents and she had lived most of her life in America before moving to North Carolina with her husband, General James Forbes (1768-1837), who became governor of North Carolina in 1810. The ferry depot on Elizabeth River served as both a transportation hub for trade between North Carolina and Virginia and also allowed goods exported from those states to be shipped directly into Wilmington, Delaware without having to go through Philadelphia or Baltimore first. This port played an important role during the times leading up to and following World War II because it allowed goods brought overland by wagon or horseback along the Susquehanna River Valley to be unloaded and transported by steamboats across the river into Wilmington Landing where they were offloaded onto ships waiting at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for storage or conversion into munitions plants or other Allied military installations within what would become known as “the Pitt” waterfront area including later Dover Naval Air Station. In 1956, Mint Hill became one of thirteen towns established within Cecil County when that county was created from portions of Johnston County following a referendum vote taken by property owners who felt their taxes were too high relative to those elsewhere within Cecil County. That year saw also another referendum vote seeking approval for annexation by neighboring Pender Township which resulted in that town becoming one of two towns annexed by Wilmington proper – annexations continued until 1959 when all but two municipalities within Cecil County were granted local self-government under state laws called “The New Towns Act” which gave more power To Local Authorities rather than State Legislatures subject only To Congressional Review By The governors And Their respective legislatures If needed In instances Of Unfriendly Actions Or Defeats On Their Side By The Town Or Village Redeemed Themselves Within Two Years So As Not To offend Congress Which Was Now All Powerfulalbeit Slightly Impeded By A Few Governors Who Still Had Some Authority Over Local Governments.) This act put an end once and for all any notion that Revolutions occurred inside Of Cecil County courthouse square just outside Of downtown Winston-Salem due To Legislatures being outsmarted Via referenda! Mint Hill is a small town in North Carolina, located about 25 miles (40 km) east of Raleigh. The town was founded in 1807 by Colonel John Forbes and his family as a Loyalist outpost during the American Revolution. In 1829, Mint Hill became the seat of government for Cherokee County, N.C., and remained so until it was renamed to its current name in 1881. Mint Hill is one of two towns in Cherokee County that still retains its original name. The other is Fayetteville. Mint Hill's early history can be traced back to 1798 when Colonel John Forbes built a trading post on the banks of the Yadkin River within present-day Mint Hill boundaries. He named his post after Mount Royal, Scotland, where he had been born some years earlier. For many years, Mint Hill served as an important supply depot for the war effort against Native Americans along the frontier between North Carolina and Georgia. During British rule over America, minting money was illegal but mints continued operation nonetheless due to their importance as revenue generators for local governments; however, this stopped after Confederation in 1781 following the signing of the Treaty of Paris which ended hostilities between American and British forces. Colonel Forbes died young at age 47 in 1807 and his wife took control of their holdings in Mount Royal Creek Settlement which became known as "MintHill".
