Monroe, North Carolina was the home of the first firearm in the United States. The rifle known as the " musket" was made in Monroe in 1795 by Captain John Brown and Lt. Colonel James Wade.
Monroe is a small town in North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Monroe was founded in 1807 by French colonists and named for General James Monroe. The town's first store opened in 1810. In 1865, the town became a municipal seat and remain so to this day. Monroe is located on Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard, which runs north-south through its center. According to the 2010 census, the township has a total area of , of which (or 98%) is land and (or 2%) is water. According to tradition, local boys were able to catch a big fish that had been swimming around in a river near their home one day and bring it back into town for display in the public courthouse square until it grew tired of being displayed there and left for good! The first grocery store opened in Monroe in 1865 when Amos Dickson donated some land to support it; later that year he also built the first schoolhouse on what are now Circle Drive and Main Street. By 1870, there were five stores open within two miles of town limits - four general stores and one brewery - with over fifty people living in Monroe at that time. In 1907-08 an unsuccessful effort was made by then Mayor John Beasley to consolidate all townships into one municipality due primarily to financial considerations but also because many residents wanted more than just two small villages apiece - they desired something closer resembling larger metropolitan areas such as Charlotte or Raleigh where businesses could be counted on main streets instead of scattered throughout individual townships like they were then with Monroe Comprehensive Plan No 1 (1912). Ultimately no annexation attempt was successful but did result in consolidation forms being filed with other jurisdictions adjacent thereto until 1912 when Monroeville annexed nearby Highpoint following approval from both municipalities’ councils despite protests from residents who felt their communities would have thrived even without incorporation...The only thing new about Monroe Township since 1909 has been its name change from Union County Borough to Monroe Township afterJames Fenton became its first mayor...As late as 1951 most everyone still called themselves “Monroeites” although some people had moved away since then...When Interstate 95 enters the township boundaries from Greensboro proper it becomes immediately apparent that things have changed: commercial establishments lining US 95 turn into dusty motels catering not just to motorists heading out for work but also those seeking pleasure activities such as casinos or golf courses; once again rural life takes center stage while surface transportation gets better treatment than ever before thanks largely to Interstate 95 mainline extension projects currently under way…Today’s population reflects much change over time including suburbanization rising along I-95 corridor while smaller communities within our borders continue strugglingalbeit slowlyto maintain their own level playing field vis-à-vis larger neighbors

Here are five examples: 1) The Monroe County Courthouse is one of the most important pieces of local history in Monroe. It was built in 1792 and has been used as a courthouse since it was first constructed. The building is also significant because it is one of only two remaining courthouses that were erected during the colonial period in North Carolina. 2) One of the earliest mills on what is now known as Monroeville Street was built by Alexander Moncrief in 1783. This mill was eventually destroyed, but its ruins still remain today. 3) The Battle Royal Massacre took place on July 10, 1800, when a group of Native Americans led by Chief John Wesley attempted to attack white settlers near present-day Charlotte, NC. The clash resulted in about 50 fatalities and many more injuries for both sides involved. In commemoration of this notorious event, a plaque located at Cherokee Nation headquarters commemorates the tragedy. 4) The John F Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum is located within walking distance from Monroe City Hall – an important historically notable property in Monroe itself! This library and museum are dedicated to President John F Kennedy’s life and work throughout his career as an American president. Additionally, there are several exhibits inside the library about North Carolina’s history associated with JFK’s presidency including his role as governor of North Carolina from 1963-1965 and his time as president from 1961-1963. 5) One particular piece of local history that stands out prominently within Monroe is the “Walking Stonehenge” located just outside town limits on State Route 2171A (formerly US 19). Dating back to approximately 2400 BC, this large standing stone henge has been studied by archaeologists for over 65 years!
Monroe was founded in 1785 by John Monroe and his brother, James. The town was named after the Monroes' ancestral home on the island of Monticello. The brothers developed a farmstead and trading post near present-day Monroe and began to export goods to Carolina. In 1809, they built a larger white house on what is now Elm Street in Monroe. They served as governor of North Carolina from 1813 until their death in 1824.
