Mount Airy is a small town located in Alamance County, North Carolina. The population of Mount Airy was 3,827 at the 2010 census. Mount Airy is a census-designated place in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham MSA. The Mount Airy community was founded in 1881 by members of the Baptist Church who wanted to find a site for their new church and school. The original Mount Airy Baptist Church building still stands today and serves as a museum. The community grew quickly and by 1900 it had a post office, store, blacksmith shop, three churches (one of which still operates), one school and six homes. In 1908 the local telephone company built its first line through town and Mount Airy became an important stop on this route. The town continued to grow until World War II when most of the infrastructure was destroyed or damaged in bombings or other military activity in the area. After World War II, Mount Airy slowly declined as various businesses closed down and people left for more rural settings. However, over time some residents have rallied to revive the community with many activities like artisanship shops, music festivals and antique auctions that continue to be held today. Mount Airy was founded in 1792 by Captain John Ashe as a mission station on the mountain. The name comes from the Mount of Airy, which is located nearby. The town of Mount Airy (now called Greenville) was founded in 1837, and it became a college town in 1915.
