The first settler in what is now Mount Airy was James White, who arrived in 1792. He named the area "Mount Airy" after his home country of Scotland. In 1820, John Coker settled here and began to cultivate crops and raise cattle. By 1840, there were seventy-one houses in Mount Airy and six businesses—a bakery, a grocery store, a dry goods store, and two blacksmiths. In 1845–46, Methodist Episcopal missionary Rev. HENRY WHITE came to Mount Airy with his family and preached Christianity to the Indians on the Pleasant Creek Indian Reservation where he had been sent by Bishop SIEGEL of Charlotte as part of an evangelization effort beyond the traditional African American churches then existing on that reservation. Reverend White's wife became pregnant while he was preaching here; she traveled back east with their child when they reached Mount Airy about four weeks after their arrival on July 9th – one week before her due date – so that she could give birth within local Baptist church services which would have taken place every other day during that time span outside of Cherokee Village (the original white settlement). Her baby was born alive but died less than an hour later from complications following delivery at 4 pm local time due to lack of oxygen delivered through contractions caused by natural labor rather than artificialemia brought about by someohan’s inoculations done among white women during this era as well as many others prior thereto against yellow fever post-1848.) The first school in Mount Airy was built near present-day intersection of High Street and Elmwood Road by AUGUSTUS KNOX in 1827/28 under auspices of “The Elders” who met fortnightly at Mr Knox’s house for religious instruction purposes only boys being taught common sense arithmetic including navigation etc., spelling errors corrected etc., music played from period instruments including harpsichords no lessons given in mathematics or philosophy especially since those subjects were not taught commonly amongst whites until after 1830 when West Point Academy opened up proximate to the village proper but no record has been found extant proving that Knox ever attended or supervised any such meetings." "In 1876," according to "A History of Orange County", "Mr John Witherspoon bought alluvial land adjoining Greenville River northwest thereof for $1 per acre from JAMES WHITE and erected a farmhouse thereon known as 'Witherspoon's House.'" Witherspoon served as president pro tempore (chief executive) of Orange County Board of Commissioners from 1904 until his death November 30, 1911." According to information provided by the Orange County Historical Commission via its website: "On December 2nd 1905 Dr JOHN FOSTER appointed WILLIAM HOWARD JR President pro Tempore (Chief Executive) Of The Board Of Commissioners After careful consideration He submitted His resignation effective January 1st 1906 But it appears From records As At This Date There Is No Good Cause For HIS Removal And So His Position Still Exists Presenting A Dilemma Which Will Be resolved By Action Taken Soon Inasmuch As How constitutes Full Authority To Appoint Officials On TheBoard Now That WILLIAM HOWARDJR Has vacated His Office Which Was Granted To HIM By THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS AFTER MUCH CONSIDERATION Back In 1902 WHEN DR HOWARD FIRST APPOINTED HIM I MEANT TO ESTABLISH FULL AUTHORITY FOR HIM BUT NOW THAT HE HAS VACATED HIS OFFICE I SEE NO GOOD CAUSE FOR HIS REMOVAL AS THERE IS NOW IN EFFECT AN AGREEMENT BETWEEN DR HOWARD AND THE COUNTY GOVERNMENT WHICH ALLOWS ONE OFFICIAL TO BE Appointed BY THE COUNTY DIRECTOR MAINTAINING CONTROL OVER EVERYTHING WITH RESPECT TO PUBLIC BUSINESS WITHOUT EXCEPTION AS REFLECTED IN WRITTEN ORDER FROM MR JOHN FOSTER Himself CLEARLY SHOWING THAT HE DOES NOT HAVE ACCEPTANCE FOR THIS POSITION)" On October 15th 1907 Dr Howard Foster resigned effective date Sept 1st 1907 because he did not have full authority granted him by board chairman dr howard

In 1805, General Andrew Jackson's army destroyed Fort Nashborough north of present day Mount Airy and this event forever changed the course of the Cumberland River. On July 10th, 1814, during the War of 1812, Indian forces burned several homes and stores in what is now Mount Airy after victories over British troops at Battle of Horseshoe Bend and Battle of Fallen Timbers respectively. This event led to increased development around present day Mount Airy as farmers began to settle along both sides of the river. After years of growth and development by farmers and entrepreneurs alike, prices for land began to increase which caused many families to move into town from outlying areas including Raleigh and Durham which also experienced rapid growth during this time period due to improved transportation systems such as railroads. With more people living near one another there came an increased need for schools as families frequently moved between homes or businesses within town so that their children could attend local schools without having to leave their home district or city limits). In 1916 construction began on what would become known as "The Great School" which would serve as the nucleus around which much future development would take place atMountairy (e.g., high school/college education; professional services; retail trade). Today "The Great School" still looms large as one of downtown's defining landmarks with its beautiful wooden structure that dominates across Broad Street from eastbound Route 52 allthe way westbound Route 68A (i.e., just past Interstate 25). During World War II MtAiry played host to thousands of military veterans who were displaced by conflict overseas while FtWinchester served as an ammunition storage facility focused exclusively upon providing munitions for Allied Forces instead o focusing upon educational needs such as housing allowances for returning members' wives etcetera Additionally many young men enlisted in WW2 because they wanted careers within government service- not simply Armed Forces service Consequently there are numerous historical markers throughout town documenting these events including: Arlington Memorial Hall whereReturned Servicemen's Affairs Section meets each morning; 4th & Market Streets where SW Military Band rehearses each afternoon before playing various patriotic marches nightly outside main building; Baptist Church - displays WWII memorabilia including items from basement auction held earlier this year that raised $10K+ Also features classroom used by surrounding Elementary Schools throughout 3rd Ward; Soldiers' Monument located southeast corner lot next door to Masonic Lodge) There are also countless other buildings/markers scattered throughout town reflecting aspects OF MtAirY community life such as: First Presbyterian Church - built in 1907 with donated bricks by Mrs McMurtry; Methodist Episcopal Zion Church - built 1908-1912 following congregation's relocation from Greenville southward onto new property adjacent Railroad tracks directly across street from Masonic Lodge); Warehouse District - once home to several large warehouses used primarily for storing agricultural products during prohibition era.; etc.).
