Mount Airy is a town in Union County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 6,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wilmington–Fayetteville–Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first gun in Mount Airy was an Old World pattern musket that belonged to John Wesley Hardin in 1798. The town is located on the border of Gaston and Chowan counties and it straddles both banks of the Yadkin River. The name "Mount Airy" comes from two sources: one is from an early settler named Ebenezer Mount (1768-1833), who named a mountain after himself; and another derives from "airy," meaning "a high peak." A post office called Mount Airy was established in 1837, and remained in operation until 1907. From 1837 to 1907, Mount Airy was part of Craven County. In 1768 Ebenezer Mount founded a small settlement near present-day Mount Airy on what are now known as East Gaston and West Chowan Counties, in order to establish himself as a lead miner in this new area of land that had been opened up by British settlers during the preceding decade or so. Settlers built their homes around log cabins made from tree limbs laid down vertically for insulation against the elements. By 1800 about 60 people lived there - most were farmers who raised cattle, pigs, hogs, wheat and other crops; some cut trees for lumber. In 1804 Ebenezer's son John erected a sawmill on his father's property which continued to be run until 1870 when it was replaced by an electric plant operated by the United States government under Department of Agriculture contracts rather than by family hands One interesting feature about those years was that many men left home to work long hours at various jobs all over Appalachia while their families stayed back behind to farmsteads numbering several hundred people – but never more than 500 people because transportation became available only duringlinearly stagecoaches transporting goods between towns like Raleigh and Durham via Pisgah Gap then Kyung Hee Ferry crossing overhead . In 1865, Confederate troops under General Robert Ewell burned down most of Mount Airy while withdrawing from Yorktown following the battle; no damage occurred to either property or people as a result. Since then, much development has taken place within Mount Airy: The first high school opened in 1907; a hotel/motel complex opened up around 1960; and a new shopping mallopened up around 1990).
