At this point, Bragg’s forces had become separated into two groups: one led by Meade as they traveled northeast along I-95 towards Winston Churchill; the other composed of Lee’s command as they traveled southeast along US-421 towards Roanoke Island National Battlefield Park located just east of Interstate 95 between Hickory and Moorestown townships! On May 6th at 2 PM, Confederate General Robert Evers observed a Union cavalry detachment ride past him on Highway 421 east of Roanoke Island National Battlefield Park boundaries! A few minutes later he heard gunfire coming from this location followed by several explosions! These gunshots were most likely those fired by Confederate Cavalry Colonel James Longstreet who had been following Varnell northeasterly directions when he ran into trouble! It is now believed that Colonel Longstreet mistook Patriot Militiamen for Confederates and opened fire upon them without provocation! This event is also known as “The Battle of Roanoke Island” or simply “the Fight at Roanoke Island” due to its notoriety throughout South Carolina & North Carolina!! The Union troops managed to gain control over this park after fierce fighting which lasted around three hours!!! At this time there were no roads leading up or down Mountain Drive so shots could be easily fired onto Old Rocky Top Road leading down from adjoining Fayetteville Township!!!! Furthermore it would have been difficult for either side to move reinforcements up or down mountain if needed!!!!!!!!!!!!! This situation may have contributed heavily to why both armies hesitated before engaging!!! This victory at Roanoke Island demonstrated Northern soldiers ability not only with firearms but also with horseback riding which would come into play during later conflicts such as The Civil War!!!!! For many residents living within easy reach of military engagements like this it served as a Sign that things were definitely not going well back home.........

That evening young Lieutenant John Sevier became acquainted with Capt’n Gates while they were dining near Eutaw Springs and fell headlong into Table Rock ravine below which he Anon upon seeing us descending made bold offer us Clothing & Money if we would go up with him & take possession of an chalice or cross within convenient distance.—He too being out of breath offered those articles but when I refused they came again several times daily so that I grew impatient.—AfterSeveral Nights Efforts We got no further then this point but heretofore our Paint had not failed us So we entertained them all day with Presents till dark.— Unfortunately for Lt.-Genl Greene his Horse getting tired shortly after dinner broke loose from its Brigade Troops guarding King's Bridge near Eutaw Springs where it wander'd off happily without Leave one half mile from our House— For which we are very much ashamed both myself & Capt’n Gates felt very much embarrassed In 1882 Mount Airy post office opened because Raleigh then only served Cary County Within 10 miles radius A fire destroyed most of downtown Mt Airy on October 7th 1897, burning for days until fighting ended leaving little left standing save two houses still standing today
