From the days of Revolutionary War until current day, gun targets were a popular and usual sight in Mount Airy. The town was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1778, just after the British Invasion of America. Throughout its history, Mount Airy has been a center forgun shooting and hunting. Today, residents continue to enjoy this traditional activity and many businesses offer target ranges as well. The first firearms used to hunt deer or other game in North Carolina were muskets. These weapons were not very effective at distances beyond about 60 yards and required practice to be proficient with them. However, these early rifles did provide some excitement for those who could shoot them effectively. In 1778, two Scottish brothers named John and Robert Macdonald patented a design for an artillery piece that became known as the "Macdonald Rifle." This weapon was designed to fire shot up into the air like a cannonball instead of using Reloading bullets which would fall back down again on impact with the ground. This new design allowed military commanders more control over their troops while they fought against American forces encamped along the frontier. In 1838, Mount Airy resident James Waddell developed what is now called the "Waddell Rifle" which fired buckshot rounds instead of Reloading bullets which made it much more effective at long range than earlier guns. This rifle quickly gained popularity among local hunters who could now bring down big game with ease. By 1850, all counties in North Carolina had at least one shotgun range open to the public! Even today, many people enjoy practicing their marksmanship skills at these ranges across North Carolina!

In 1865, a blacksmith named John Hargrave erected a gun range and shooting gallery on what is now Summit Drive, just east of Interstate 95. The range continued to be used until around 1927.

Mount Airy is located on an elevation of 5,570 feet (1,815 m). It lies within Pisgah National Forest and experiences rolling hills with a temperate climate. The first settler in what became Mount Airy was James Bicknell who arrived in 1792 from Virginia. He named his land "Mount Airy" after his home state of Maryland. After years of growth and development, Mount Airy's peak reached its peak as a result of World War II when it served as Headquarters for the Allied Expeditionary Force during Operation Overlord. Today, Mount Airy still has some military use including USAF Station Cecil Harnett which overlooks nearby Buncombe County Airport; also there are two other airfields used by the USAF: Fort Bragg AFB and Tyndall AFB. In 1814, Samuel Ashe founded a Baptist church in what would become Mount Airy and named it "Avery Chapel." In 1831 he donated land to be used for a school system that would eventually grow into Asheville University. In 1886 Cherokee Indian Chief John Ross travelled through Pisgah National Forest on his way to meet Ulysses S Grant at Big Mountain Lake where he met representatives from many nations including America's First Nation Iroquois people who were also among Grant's guests during his visit to Pisgah National Park; this event helped solidify American Indian suspicion towards white society that had arisen since the end ofRevolutionary War era while they were still living under British rule throughout their continent-wide territory !date=1886

Mount Airy is a small town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,653 at the 2010 census. Mount Airy is located on the eastern edge of Alamance County and is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem metropolitan area. It falls within both Wake County and Durham County. The first permanent settler in what would become Mount Airy was James Fenton in 1790. He purchased land from the McIntosh family along with other pioneers who followed in his footsteps over the next few years. By 1800, there were only twenty people living in Mount Airy when John Blair purchased 1400 acres (5 km²) of land east of town for $2 per acre ($/hectare). In 1825, another pioneer named John Pickens donated 640 acres (24 ha) to build an academy which would serve as a center of education for African Americans west of Charlotte. This donation allowed white farmers to send their children north to attend school without fear that they would be taken away by slaveowners. In 1828, Mount Airy had its first post office which served as a center for trade and transportation between Alamance and Randolph counties. By 1830, life had settled down enough for one store and three churches to open up in what is now downtown Mount Airy; all but one closed within thirty years due to lack of business or competition from larger towns on the horizon. In 1854, surveyors found coal seams near present-day Mount Airy while exploring potential sites for a new railroad line through Alamance and Randolph Counties; this discovery led to development around present-day downtown Mount Airy culminating with construction of the original Southern Railway Depot in 1861 which still stands today across from First Baptist Church on Market Street. A second depot was built at Ransom Road northeast of town (now US 401), serving as both a local passenger train station and freight terminal until it burned down in 1905 during a storm; this event marks the first time locomotives ever derailed outside city limits! Mountairy residents have long enjoyed access to nature here whether it’s hiking or tubing along Spring Lake or just enjoying some peace & quiet amidst towering trees & rolling hills….mountain biking enthusiasts will also enjoy exploring trails leading up into surrounding mountainside ranges – something you can do even if you don’t have any footwear! There are also plenty of agricultural opportunities available such as growing crops such as corn, soybeans, peas etc., raising livestock including pigs/poultry/beef/milk cows etc., mining coal & diamonds off nearby hillsides – things that continue today despite technological advances!
Mount Airy was a small town located in Fayette County, North Carolina, United States. It was founded by farmers in 1827 and grew to become a large community with around 1,000 residents. The town was destroyed by fire in 1889 and is now a ghost town.
