Mount Airy is located in the town of Rocky Mount, North Carolina and has a population of about 25,000. The town was founded in 1849 by Captain James Wright and his wife, Esther. The Wright family ran a sawmill until 1861 when they moved to Mount Airy. In 1865, Captain Wright donated land to the Town for school purposes. In 1875, the local paper reported that “the citizens of Rocky Mount have erected a beautiful old brass clock on High Street which is a source of much gratification to all who visit it.” In 1903, the Wilson-Mankin Company built a machine shop at 5 South Main Street in Mount Airy. This company manufactured cannons and artillery pieces for both Confederate and Union forces during the American Civil War. From 1904-1910, this company also manufactured rifles for sale to civilians in North Carolina. In 1916, Lieutenant Colonel John Sutherlin purchased land east of town from Captains James Wright and William Fenton Piper for $1 million dollars. At this time, Mount Airy had only two schools - one public and one private -and no businesses or other infrastructure apart from a few homes dating back to the 1800s. Lt Col Sutherlin soon began expanding his holdings with several new plantations across from Rocky Mount Baptist Church (now known as First Baptist) on Patton Road between Asbury Drive and East Market Street on what is now Providence Road just east of Interstate 95/I-95 Business Route 458/Route 258). The first property was acquired near what is now Appalachian State University; then another property was acquired near Morehead City; finally an adjacent piece of property was acquisition just north of I-95/Route 58 (now called Patterson Road) where he built his final plantation – Castle Hill – which extended over 6 miles (11 km). By 1922 there were 10 plantations with more than 200 slaves working them – making him one of the largest cotton slaveholders in America at that time! With increased production came increased prices paid by consumers for goods made with slave labor including guns made by Mountain Arms Manufacturing Company in Nashua NH fame under contract to Smith & Wesson Corporation [the predecessor company to Springfield Armory] . Gunmakers provided firearms not only for military use but also target shooting competitions held at various locations throughout eastern North Carolina during World War I . As gun production grew increasingly automated over succeeding decades culminating with mass produced firearms such as those produced by Smith & Wesson Corporation beginning in 1939 these costs associated with human labor slowly decreased while profits soared leaving many African Americans behind while white supremacists enjoyed increasing power through technological advances

The post office opened in this village on April 12, 1870 under name "MountAiry". A year later (1871), a road leading to the village was completed which residents called "Addison Road" because developer Jameson Addison donated one acre (0.40 km²) for the road's construction Additionally in 1870–72 two or three stores were built near what is now known as Addison Square including Store No 1 where Mr John Pope bought goods for his family during their stay in 1800s before they moved away When Raleigh began expanding rapidly into eastern Durham COUNTY starting about 1900 lots were sold off parcels started being developed around 1920 by Elmer Moody lot located east side between New Hope Rd/Old Hwy 7th Ave northeast corner just south of WNC Welcome Center
