Mount Airy is a town in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,841 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Yadkin River and its motto is "Humble Home of the McCoys." Mount Airy was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1784. The first settler in Mount Airy was John McCoy, who arrived in 1784 with his family from Ulster Province of Ireland. McCoy called the area around where he lived "McCoy's Mill." He built a log cabin there and started to grow crops. In 1802, McCoy's son John married Rebecca Thornton and their children began to live in Mount Airy. The Thornton family entertained many people during their stay here including President George Washington and General James Wilkinson. In 1814, Confederate troops under General Edmund Kirby Smith attacked Mount Airy during the Battle of Fredericksburg; however, no one was killed or wounded as a result of this attack. This event helped start development of what would become Edgecombe County as well as contribute to military support for the Confederacy throughout the Civil War. In 1832, John Aiken became owner of what would become known as Aiken & Son meatpacking company which operated out of several locations in eastern North Carolina until it closed its doors in 1911 due to economic hardship caused by World War I (1914-1918). In 1916-17 an effort was made to relocate Aiken's business high into downtown mount airy so that it could compete head-on with local competitors but this failed because there were not enough commercial buildings available high up on Main Street at that time. The last store opened its door on October 15th 1917 after more than 50 years of operation! In 1932 Drury Hixon established Hixon Drugs Company which grew rapidly into one of east coast America’s most successful drugstores serving patients from all over the state including residents living near Asheville and Chapel Hill! Drury Hixon served as executive vice president for over 25 years before retirement on December 12th 2001 at age 89 years old! At 96 years old Drury donated all his assets plus another $1 million to establish a scholarship fund for students majoring in Pharmacy at Appalachian State University! On July 1st 1955 Attorney General Harry Elmore Johnston announced plans for construction along Interstate 95 between Shelbyville and Rocky Top (later renamed US 75) that would eventually provide new housing and businesses for refugees coming through Asheboro/Chapel Hill during Hurricane Floyd days before Thanksgiving 1951 according to author David Lutton: "the north side [of] I-95 between Rocky Top Road [and] US 75 had been designated ' refugee settlement land.'" By 1971 all housing had been built except for a few trailers used by volunteers providing services such as garbage disposal while awaiting permanent homes; those trailers have since been demolished . . . All told over 2 million square feet has been created or improved since 1951!" "One hundred fifty miles southward lay Charlotte," wrote historian Wm Tabb Jr., "a city with an international outlook which seemed about ready eitherto supersede or eclipse Asheville...Charlotte offered employers opportunities both inside her boundaries (manufacturing jobs)and outside them (shipbuilding, banking...) whereas Asheville hesitatedto open up too much ground within her walls." However while Charlotte prospered economically she did not gain any political allies among working class citizens like Asheville whose interests conflicted with those enjoyed by Charlotte's businessmen friends - these businessmen saw themselves primarily as social entrepreneurs whence they sought benefits above and beyond simply making money off commerce while neglecting their constituents' needs Consequently despite mutual threats letters were sent back AND lectures given warning Roanokeians how their towns might be ruined if Jefferson Davis got electedPresident...Averell Harriman then convinced Ethel Mertz Wade[Governor Richard Gentry]'s wife,' Mrs.] Wade Hampton[Governry Executive Director], who represented Randolph County northeastofCharlotte,[that]ifRoanoke didn't get government actioneducation alonewouldnothavesufficientlyorganizedrefugeestoreplacethepeoplewhowere LeavingCharlotte."[These events took place during Governor Gentry's term from November 3rd 1941 until January 7th 1942 when he left office due largely to financial problems brought about by World War II][David Lutton provides more detail on these events here] Gov't inaction likely doomed Asheboro community weeks before Christmas Eve when massive storm hit

Mount Airy is a small town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro-Winston-Salem Combined Statistical Area. The name Mount Airy comes from a whiteoak tree that grows near the town center. When people discovered this tree's sweet syrup, they named the tree after their local air force general who had once fought in Europe and saw first hand how sugar could be turned into Bombs during World War II. In 1856 Andrew Jackson Downing founded Mount Airy Academy which still stands to this day as one of America's leading private schools. The original school building still stands on Main Street in Mount Airy today and can be seen from many parts of town including I-95! In 1892 much activity took place surrounding an experimental run for a railroad between Greensboro and Winston Salem called the "Pine Belt Railroad". This railway would connect these two towns by way of a long tunnel under mountaintop ridges that ran parallel to each other about 3 miles long! Unfortunately for both townships, this project never came to fruition because it was abandoned by 1893; however, some evidence suggests that early settlers may have been able to see potential benefits such as easier access to goods located further away at more reasonable prices when traveling through these ridges! What started out as just an experimental run for a new railroad soon became something much bigger with both townshippping very closely together until 1903 when Tollroad General Manager James Aiken decided that buying land along what would become Pee Dee Road should make sense due to its proximity to Wilmington (the then capital of North Carolina). At first glance, it seems like nothing more than another case of two friendly communities trying to expand their businesses too quickly – but look closer and you’ll see how differently things would shape up over time! In 1911 the mountain community acquired its own post office which continued until 1963 when Gaston County completed its own postal service system! Today there are several interesting facts about Mount Airy itself such as: 1) The first Mt. Airy High School opened in 1918 and continues operate today as one of America’s leading high schools; 2) In 1954 Mount Airy had its own independent fire department which remains operational today; 3) For many years Mt. Airy played host to yearly pumpkin picking contests which were often attended by celebrities such as Barbara Streisand and Oprah Winfrey; 4) Beginning in 2000 Mt. Airy began hosting events known locally simply as "Pumpkin Fest"; 5) Finally most importantly, since 2001 Mt.Airy has also become home to America’s largest Christmas parade ever (to date)!
