Mount Airy Rifle and Pistol Club, Inc. was founded in 1899. The club has been meeting at the old Presbyterian church on Park Avenue since then. In 1934, the club moved to its present location on Old Fairgrounds Road. The club currently has a range, rifle and pistol ranges, as well as a library and museum. The first firearms were not rifles but pistols that belonged to Rev. Drury & Co., merchants in Mount Airy who supplied weapons for militias and other events in the area during the 1800s. By 1892 there were at least six rifle ranges open in North Carolina including one located at Mount Airy which served as an early training ground for future riflemen of both state and national fame like General Robert E Lee, Jr.. Throughout much of the 20th century many famous military commanders used North Carolina rifles in their campaigns such as General George Washington, Ulysses S Grant, Franklin D Roosevelt and Japan’s Emperor Hirohito during World War II. In 1935, the club moved from its original location on Park Avenue to Old Fairgrounds Road after it became apparent that more space was needed for all of the various activities associated with being a member of Mount Airy Rifle & Pistol Club Incorporated (MRPC). At that time MRPC had over 220 members across 27 states with schools/infrastructure throughout every Southern Appalachian town serving as our range grounds; rifle ranges included those located in Asheville (1930-31), Salisbury (1937-38), West Asheville (1939-41), Frogtown (1945) Lenoir City (1945), Huntersville(1950) Waynesboro(1964-1965) Hickory Point NRA near Charlotte NC addition also . One major event held each year at our new site was our annual “Picnic Days” where we would take turns firing rifles from our longRange guns until eveningfall making use of any cover possible while enjoying some delicious dinner provided by friends or family who lived nearby! Our current Range Superintendent is Mr./Ms Tammy Sellers who has come about five years ago having previously been Director of Ranges for two other clubs which have since closed – Greenbrier Firearms Museum near Morgantown WV and Haywood Gunsmithing School just outside Hendersonville TN!Tammy is truly dedicated to her job – she always puts her focus on making sure all members are able to enjoy their range privileges even when they are outside working!

Mount Airy is a small town located in the Pender County area of North Carolina. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. Mount Airy is one of two towns in Pender County that are considered "villages." The other village is Gastonia. The first settler in Mount Airy was James Ewing, who arrived in 1786 and named the land for his friend, Mount Airy Mountain. Ewing's son, John Ewing, also settled in Mount Airy and farmed the land until 1812 when he sold it to George Patton. In 1831, Daniel Webster bought 1,000 acres of land from George Patton and built a house on what is now Main Street. In 1835-36, General Nathaniel Banks visited Mount Airy and inspected the town's construction projects before marching back into North Carolina with orders to build a road through Pender County. In 1870s-1910s many residents of Mount Airy engaged in agriculture or stock raising as their mainstay economic activity providing them with food for themselves and their families while additional support came from local churches which gave needy villagers clothing and shelter during times of drought or war time need. During World War II much talent was generated by many locals who worked throughout the munitions plants right outside our town limits giving us perhaps our most famous resident Guenther Weissman who became an American composer after serving 19 years as an aerial bombardier aboard bombers called "Enola Gay". After World War II he began teaching at nearby UNC Chapel Hill where he remains today as Emeritus Professor emeritus of Musicology at UNC Chapel Hill School of Music where he has taught since 1961 until his retirement on October 30th 2021
