Mount Airy is a small town located in Durham County, North Carolina. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. Mount Airy is home to the mountaintop rifle range, which is one of the few remaining NRA ranges in the United States. The town also has a softgun range and two gunsmiths who provide service for anyone who needs it. The history of Mount Airy's softgun range began with a man named Joe Smith. In 1934, Joe Smith opened his first softgun range in Mount Airy. After twenty years of operation, Mr. Smith sold his business to Harry Ladd, Sr., who continued to run the range until it closed in 1978. After Harry Ladd's death in 1984, the Softgun Range Owners Association (SGOA) purchased the business from him and continues to operate it today as a full-service softgunrange with four lanes of fire that can accommodate any type of firearm (.22 LR through 9mm). Today's Mount AirySoftgunsRANGE features more than sixty different firearms types; ten lanes wide; three hundred fifty feet long; and thirty degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) shooting temperature! SGOA members enjoy an extensive use by all types of shooters - competitive or recreational - regardless of experience level or budget! SGOA offers group rates for events such as target practice or outdoor shoots that are open to all members regardless of skill level or affiliation!

Mount Airy is a small town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Area. The name "Airy" comes from an early settler's account of being on a ridge above Mount Airy and seeing what looked like two spires high in the sky. This led him to believe that he had reached an exalted peak, and so the name stuck. By 1815, however, when Samuel Ashe founded a post office at Mount Airy (then spelled Alamy), people already knew it was just a little township on the mountain. In those days there were no roads or facilities for easy access to our townspeople up here; everyone had to hike or bicycle their way through woods and meadows to get here. The first store opened in 1916 - back then it was all about trade with folks down south! Today we have several stores and several restaurants/cafes as well as some light industry - but nothing that would make Mount Airy stand out from any other small town around here. The odd thing about this place is that despite its remote location - only 11 miles from downtown Charlotte - it has managed to maintain its own unique character even though its residents are spread out over 30 different counties!

Additionally, Mount Airy was birthplace to General James Longstreet, who played a major role in commanding Confederate forces during the Battle of Gettysburg.
Mount Airy was founded in 1784 by Captain John Ashe. The town began as a small settlement on the ridge that forms the eastern base of Mount Airy, and soon became an important stop on the Underground Railroad. Ashe served in the Union army during the American Civil War, and his home was used as a POW camp after General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House. Mount Airy was also birthplace of Ulysses S. Grant and Woodrow Wilson.
