New Bern was founded in 1768 by General John Forbes when he and his army moved from an area near present-day Hillsborough to take command of what would become Guilford County during the American Revolution. In 1835, New Bern became a city under ordinance No. 8 of that year. As a result of its location within easy reach of both Wilmington and Raleigh, NC during the early 1800s, Newbern quickly grew into one of the most important cities in southeastern North Carolina and one of the leading commercial centers in East Tennessee. The town was first settled by Scots immigrants who arrived in search of land grants along the Yadkin River in present-day Virginia in 1670-1671 under Scottish Major General David Johnston’s command after they were expelled from their previous holdings around Roanoke Island near what is now Wilmington, North Carolina (the original name for Newbern). Captain Samuel Smith had earlier collected information that lands extending into what are now central North Carolina would be available if he could find a route to them through present-day South Carolina – information that likely led Johnston to select Newbern as his headquarters for this venture instead of neighboring Ashley or Savannah because these areas were then under British control (the British had evacuated those colonies shortly after arriving in America]). Newbern soon emerged as one of America’s leading military posts during both World Wars I and II due to its location just outside Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area on Hatteras Island off the coast (which made it accessible only by boat or air) and its role playing an essential role in Allied campaigns against Nazi Germany across much of Europe (including Operation Overlord which ended with Nazi Germany's defeat at Normandy)). After World War II ended, however, many troops stationed at Newbern returned home while others moved permanently away because Raleigh–Durham became increasingly busy with new suburban development within easy commuting distance without any similar inducements given to old soldiers encampment).
