One major attraction located within walking distance of downtown is Riverside Park which features a pond filled with alligators, free swimming for children six years old or younger and other activities outdoors throughout the year. Newbern's rich colonial history can be seen starting with its original white settlement which began on July 4th 1699 when English colonists led by Captain Francis Drake sailed into what is now Bladen County Landing Cove on Roanoke Island expecting only friendly natives. As luck would have it, they encountered Native Americans instead who were able to drive them out without any loss of life or treasure however some early settlers did manage to acquire some valuable land within present day New Bern itself including much of what is now downtown along Main Street between Swann Boulevard and Pritchard Road. Today most churches are found adjacent/in front or northeast side streets facing main thoroughfare such as Meetinghouse Square(Church Of Christ), First Baptist(Anglican), Second African Methodist Episcopal(Methodist), Congregationalist(Protestant) etc

Although founded by Scotsmen in what is now southeastern North Carolina (near where Morganton sits), it quickly grew into what is today one of America’s largest slave states: slaveowners bought up large blocks of land along either bank while slaves labored on farms nearby subsistence wages). As cotton prices plummeted during Reconstruction (1868-1877), many blacks left for better paying jobs elsewhere in Northern factories or rural areas; but white northerners continued to purchase large swaths of farmland along both banks until after Reconstruction when black ownership reverted back to whites through acquisition by absentee landlords/buyers seeking smoother transition into post-Reconstruction society.). As part of Uptown Charlotte’s rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods westward expansion began following World War II urban growth proceeded apace throughout much northeastern NC culminating in downtown Charlotte’s “Golden Triangle” – home rule for Durham County east central Raleigh – streetcar suburbs westward followed until reaching their current boundaries around 2004…. In fact only two other American cities escaped this fate: Indianapolis (1948) and Phoenix (2002). With Interstate 495 connecting all these places at freeway speeds they soon lost charm; instead they became huge shopping malls with high-rise buildings housing commercial floors above ground parking Lots….. [The study also found] that although African Americans constituted only 7%of DowntownCharlotte's 30%, their descendants make up almost half today's population due largely to migration from other partsOf America since 1970…."
