New Bern, North Carolina is a town in Craven County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Craven County. New Bern was founded in 1753 and named for Augustine Parish in Virginia. The town grew rapidly after the opening of the Cumberland Road through central North Carolina in 1818, and by 1830 it had a population of 4,611 people. The first white settler in Newbern was John Fenton who arrived on horseback from Virginia on October 15, 1753. He named his new settlement after Augustine Parish in Virginia where he had been born two years earlier. In 1800–01 Edmund Ruffin built a small cabin near what is now downtown Newbern which became the first post office in Newbern Township #2 on February 12th, 1800 under the name "Fentonville". The first store opened up just east of present day State Street on January 7th 1819 when James Buchanan Postmaster General received mail from Raleigh via this route. In 1830-31 Andrew Johnson's Department of Canaries started operations as an experiment to improve transportation between Charlotte and Raleigh over existing roads; this led to increased travel within and outside of NC limits by settlers which helped spur growth within the community during these early years. By 1840 there were 2 stores (one grocery and one general store) with a total population of 10 people living inside city limits while 5 people lived outside city limits across three lots that bordered main streets: Second street west to First street north then Third street east to Market Street (now Elm Street). New Bern, North Carolina is a town located in Randolph County, North Carolina. The population was 7,446 at the 2010 census. New Bern is one of the most important cities in the state and its economy depends upon agriculture and manufacturing. The first permanent settlement in what is now New Bern was made by English colonists under the name "Newbern" on December 12, 1705. In 1712, Captain John Smith discovered a portage route from the Catawba River to the Yadkin River and named it after his home town of Breda in Flanders, Netherlands. The area that is now New Bern was first inhabited by Cherokee people before European settlers arrived. By 1810, over 50 white families had lived there for some time before becoming part of Randolph County’s peach orchards and cotton plantations. On May 2, 1835, Governor Tryon authorized the creation of Randolph County as an all-black county with a population of only 10 whites. By 1840 more than 120 white families had moved into what is now New Bern from surrounding counties. In 1861 during Confederate General Robert Ewell's campaign against Union General Ulysses S Grant throughout eastern North Carolina he advanced through Randolph County on his way to serve Governor Pendergast on occasion at Easleyville which led to open warfare between black residents of Durham and Raleigh areas including Newbern where skirmishes took place until late nights near downtown on November 15th when Confederate cavalry rode into city limits undetected killing 5 men before withdrawing without effecting any damage or taking any prisoners while causing extensive property damage amounting to $2 million (2005 estimate). Following World War II there were many African American veterans settled here who founded businesses such as Black National Bank & Trust Company; First Baptist Church; United Negro College Fund Inc.; Saint Augustine Missionary Baptist Church (now Renaissance Academy); Stokes University School Of Law; First Christian School; Atlantic Broadcasting System Citadel TV studio complex; Brookhaven Science Center; Greater Providence Episcopal Church (now Blessed Sacrament Catholic Parish) - all operated by African American veteran organizations such as Tuskegee Airmen Veterans Museum Association Inc.; African American Cultural Heritage Foundation Inc.; Daughters of The American Revolution - later renamed DAR USA (formerly Daughters of The Confederacy) - also active here as well as numerous churches/mosques/temples established by these groups among others ensuing various cultural programs throughout this period often resulting in increased tourism within the cityscape often drawing large crowds throughout summer months making it one of America’s largest open-air music festivals annually attracting major names like Jay Zendereff & Kanye West headline performances along with top notchers like Tina Turner headlined events both preceding & following Hurricane Florence devastating much coastal real estate within days vicinityOctober 25 –November 1st
The town of New Bern was founded in 1755 by the British military officer, Major John Butler. The town was named after John's brother-in-law and neighbor, Nicholas van der Orde. The first settler in New Bern was Nicholas' wife, Mary Butler. She and her husband built a log cabin on the present day corner of Fourth and Market Streets. In 1757, their son George moved to New Bern from Scotland with his family. He began working for Captain James Cook on the HMS Endeavour voyage around Cape Horn in 1758. After the voyage, George married Ann Read who lived in Bristol County at that time. They had two children: Ann (1759-1827) and James (1762-1835). In 1765, Captain James Cook recommended that the British government give land to settlers for settlement in what is now North Carolina; New Bern received a grant of 3000 acres (1 km²). In 1800, Drury erected a small frame house on Third Street which served as the first courthouse in North Carolina. It is currently known as State Capitol Square and houses the offices of both the state senate and House of Representatives. In 1829, North Carolina passed an act establishing a Territorial Legislature within its borders; Newbern became one of thirteen towns located within this legislature. On July 1st 1829, Governor Tryon appointed Peter Kenedy as Mayor of Newbern; he would serve until 1836 when he resigned due to health concerns later called pneumonia. In 1830s there were efforts to erect a new courthouse near where State Capitol Square now stands; these plans never came to fruition because it was often difficult to get financing for such projects from outside sources givenNorth Carolina's high debt load at that time . However , since then there have been several attempts by private individuals or groups to purchase or build something approximating or even matching features of extant State Capitol Square buildings . One such attempt occurred in 1984 when local businessman Donny Maynes announced his intention to restore portions of State Capitol Square including an Old Courthouse Annex building which had been abandoned for years . On January 16th 1865 Union General Jubal Early arrived at Fort Fisher with his army looking for Confederate General Robert Easley who had surrendered at Durham Station three days earlier - early morning hours before Federal forces were summoned thereto by President Abraham Lincoln.. Early reachedNewbern about 2am local time just before dawn while most people were still asleep...It is said that General Early found some whisky bottles which may have motivated him into taking action against Easley rather than wait for more definitive news from Durham Station
