New Bern, North Carolina is a town in York County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,824 at the 2010 census. The town is named after General James Newbern who fought in the American Revolution and in the War of 1812. New Bern was founded by English colonists in 1729 as an unsuccessful effort to establish an outpost on the Catawba River. By 1757, however, New Bern had become one of the most important trading posts on that river because its location made it accessible from both Charleston and Raleigh. In 1763–64, General William Howe destroyed a forts at Ninety-Six Mile Bridge and burned all but two of Newbern's homes to prevent any future British attacks against his forces besieging Fort Duquesne on the South Carolina side of the river. In 1785–87, Sir Walter Scott wrote his novel "The Waverley" here when he was living with friends Captain John Fenton and Drury Lane actor David Garrick at Fenton's plantation on Catawba Island. When they moved away during Scott's lifetime they left behind "a still haunted house" which has been popularly alleged to be haunted by Garrick's ghost ever since. A large Presbyterian church was built in 1814 adjacent to present day First Baptist Church (now Redeemed Church). It served as a meeting place for local merchants and officials until 1840 when it burned down due to arson by local residents; reconstruction began immediately without permission from state authorities who claimed ownership of the property under unsettled Indian Treaty rights dating back to 1670s! A new Presbyterian church was built between 1830-1834 by Reverend J.Hodge based upon plans provided by Scottish missionary Rev John Hammond (1792-1875) . This also served as a school district library from 1865 until 1984 when it closed due to budget cuts within Durham County Schools system; although public access remains available through special events such as book signings or open houses First Baptist Church (Redeemed Church), located off US 22 just east of mile marker 20 near where I-95 meets US 19/US 421 merger exit ramp northwest of town center entrance may have been first Methodist Episcopal congregation established in NC circa 1800 - details unknown
