The history of hard gun cases in New Bern, North Carolina goes back to at least the early 1800s. One of the earliest incidents took place on September 5, 1802 when a group of men from Wilmington attacked and destroyed a stagecoach stop in New Bern. The perpetrators were brought to trial and were found guilty and sentenced to 10 years in prison. In 1819, two men from Wilmington attempted to purchase a shotgun at a store in New Bern. They were refused because the store was not open to women. This led to an altercation between the men and store employees which resulted in one man being shot and killed. In 1857, three men from Wilmington were convicted of arson for setting fire to a farmhouse near Newbern. They were sentenced to life in prison but unsuccessfully appealed their conviction before they committed suicide while serving their sentence. In 1865, six people from Wilmington admitted stealing guns from local residents during an armed robbery spree that lasted several days. Their crime was punishable by five years imprisonment but they received only four months behind bars before dying of natural causes while awaiting trial. This event is generally considered as the first time firearms had been involved in crime in New Bern. In 1898, there was another armed robbery where weapons were taken from stores in downtown New Bern; however no arrests or prosecutions occurred due to fear of reprisals against the victims’ families. In 1907, three people – two white supremacists and one black – robbed a grocery store on Tryon Street without incident; however this particular robbery does have some precedent as it happened less than two weeks prior to the opening of the Charleston Massacre that left nine whites dead and twenty-four wounded after entering into an argument with black customers at a Woolworth’s bakery

New Bern, North Carolina is a city in Durham County, North Carolina. The population was 12,526 as of the 2010 census. Its history dates back to 1735 when it was part of Alamance County. In 1814, New Bern became a part of Buncombe County and in 1829 it became completely within Durham County. The first post office in New Bern was established on November 16, 1735. The town site that would become New Bern was surveyed by Captain James Cook during his third voyage aboard the HMS Resolution in 1778-79 and named for him after he had been sighted on September 21st that year while anchored off the coast of Carolina coast from Brunswick to Wilmington inclusive. Cook's original discovery has been authenticated through historical evidence including contemporary map evidence which shows a peninsula containing what is now downtown New Bern with land extending out into Albemarle Sound} entailments were granted for 3 leagues square bounded by Tryon creek on the north, Usher creek on the east and south, Third Creek on the west and BogueSound or Outer Banks lying between them In 1798 five families of slaves brought over from South Carolina occupied a small island (now known as Georgetown) about one mile due east shoreline of Tryon Creek just upstream from present day Limits Street Bridge across said creek
New Bern was founded in 1718 as a small trading post on the Busby River. In 1805, the town was renamed New Bern after General James Fenton, who had won an important victory over British forces at the Battle of New Bern. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century and by 1870 it had a population of 5,000 people. New Bern was incorporated as a city in 1905 and its population reached 10,000 by 1950. The city declined in popularity during the 1960s and 1970s but has regained some of its former stature since 2000.
