The city also played an important role during World War II as one of six military training areas for all Allied troops stationed in North Carolina before America's entry into World War II. After America's victory over Nazi Germany in 1945, many black veterans returned home and began rebuilding what had been lost during Reconstruction while also establishing new businesses and professional opportunities for African Americans throughout North Carolina. In recent decades, much attention has been paid to downtown New Bern’s history - particularly its connections with slavery and race relations - which has led some historians to call it “the most significant slave-owning community outsideOf Atlanta or Charleston”[1]. After days of skirmishing and heavy losses on both sides, Jackson's forces finally crossed at night and stormed the fort, capturing much valuable equipment and reinforcements. Within a few months of its capture, Fort Fisher became one of America's most strategically important military installations.
