In 1876, Hargrave married Sarah Averill who later became one of Lumberton's most prominent civic leaders including serving as mayor (1912-1915), state senator (1925-1929), director for public instruction (1933-1945), chairwoman for the Board of Education (1945-1950), member for Congress from 1942 to 1948 and president pro tempore in the United States Senate from 1949 until his death in 1951. There are also several shops and restaurants located within walking distance of the community center and its library/conference room/theater/.
