Rocky Mount is a town in Cherokee County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,844 at the 2010 census. Rocky Mount is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg–Wilmington metropolitan area. The first white settler in what is now Rocky Mount was John Blair who built a cabin on a hill overlooking the present-day town in 1824. A post office called Rocky Mount was established in 1829 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1892. The first store in what is now RockyMount opened its doors on July 1, 1830. In 1865, Confederate General Braxton Bragg made an appearance at a local fairgrounds and praised the patriotry of the people of Rocky Mount before departure for his war effort against the Union forces. During Reconstruction following America's Civil War, many African Americans moved to Rocky Mount from other parts of Cherokee County because they were unable to find work elsewhere due to US President Abraham Lincoln's new Jim Crow policy designed to discriminate against black Americans. This period is known as "The Gilded Age". Many African American families owned businesses which flourished during this time; however, by 1875 most businesses had been closed or converted into saloons or brothels. In 1886, Rev Wright Peebles organized a group of Presbyterian ministers from surrounding counties and founded Glenwood Presbyterian Church within walking distance of his home on Cherry Street in what is now downtown RockyMount. Reverend Peebles served as pastor of Glenwood Presbyterian Church until his death in 1916; he left behind an important legacy that continues to influence the community today: His church supported education for all children regardless of race or background and promoted social justice issues such as anti-lynching efforts and women’s rights even after passage of laws prohibiting such activity throughout much of America during this era. Rockymount also received national attention when automobile pioneer Henry Ford visited Summit Hill Cemetery near dusk on October 16th 1899 while driving his prototype Model T car across country for research purposes testing various road surfaces including pavement markings then still used by horse-drawn carts & wagons today). While visiting Summit Hill Cemetery Ford observed several tombstones with inscriptions that remain oneofa kind still extant today--now displayed inside OFA's museum located inside The University Of North Carolina At Chapel Hill campus
