In 1871, Rocky Mount was founded by Rev. James Fenton as a Baptist church on the site of what is now the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The town's first pastor, Wm. H. Goodwin, preached there from 1872 to 1875. A school and Presbyterian church were built in Rocky Mount in 1876, and a Masonic lodge was organized in 1880. In 1901, the Methodist Episcopal Church merged with the Baptist denominations in Rocky Mount to form The First Baptist Church of Rocky Mount Incorporated. In 1924, Rev. Drury Hargrave became pastor of The First Baptist Church and served until his death in 1951. Under Drury's leadership the church began construction of its current building on Beale Street between High Street and Elm Street in 1951-1952. There were two other churches within close proximity to The First Baptist Church which functioned as worship floors for services not attended by members of the main congregation: One on Tryon Avenue south of High Street and one on Wilson Boulevard north of Elm Street which are no longer extant but are listed on historic maps as being part of that church's property The First Baptist Church located at 6th & Market Streets closed its doors for good in 1988 due to financial difficulties brought about by rises in tuition rates at UNC Chapel Hill . Thereafter it operated as an open-air movie theater until 2000 when it closed permanently due to structural problems
