It is part of the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area. Rocky Mount is home to United States Air Force Academy Cadet Squadron 3 and United States Coast Guard Station Rocky Mount. The town was named for General Andrew Jackson, who fought in the American Revolution and served as President of the United States from 1829 to 1837. The first settler in what is now Rocky Mount was James Caldwell, who arrived in 1775 with his family from Georgia. He named his home after General Washington's Battle of Yorktown, which occurred two years earlier in 1781. In 1830, when RockyMount became a town under state law, it had a population of only 2 people. A post office was established at RockyMount on October 12, 1830; its first mailing took place on October 26 of that year. At that time there were no banks or other financial institutions in the community. In 1840, when another post office opened at Rocky mount by virtue of state statute 527A(c) (then called "Goldsboro"), local merchants began to send their mail out through this new facility instead of relying solely on horseback riders transporting mail bags over short distances across Western NC back then (the Transylvania Road). In 1861 Census data shown here shows that there were 10 residents living in what is now Rocky Mount - six men and four women - all farmers with one or two slaves working out side their homes; they also raised chickens and pigs during those early days before anything else grew hereabouts! By 1870 there were 80 residents living within a radius around present day Rocky Mount due primarily to railroad construction nearby and an increasing demand for manufactured goods brought intoNC by railroads starting up again during WWI; following World War I production slowed down somewhat but still continued thanks largely to WWII technology advancements which made transportation more efficient than ever before!! During the late 1800s & early 1900s many influential gentlemen such as Senators John Fenton (D-NC) & Jesse Helms (R-NC), Drayton Webb (D-NC), Thaddeus Stevens (D-NY),& others resided/lived nearby while attending UNC Asheville Business School primarily taking classes/taking exams related thereto outside doorstop sessions offered daily thru interurban telegraph lines leased (& operated) by UNC Asheville faculty members
