In 1865, Charles Goodyear and his associates invented the first vulcanized rubber tire. Two years later, he patented a new type of plastic tire that could be inflated with air from a pump. Rocky Mount is a small town located in Wake County, North Carolina. The population was 2,044 at the 2000 census. Rocky Mount is home to the Rocky Mount Historic District and the Rocky Mount Cemetery. It was founded in 1792 by Captain John Smith as a trading post on Roanoke Island. The first settler in what is now Rocky Mount was James Johnston. He arrived there in 1793 and bought land from the Native Americans. Johnston built a house and barn near what is now Academy Street and named his property RockyMount after its resemblance to Roanoke Island which he had seen while sailing on his ship, the Liberty. In 1817, Colonel David Henderson assigned British Major General Robert Meade with the task of destroying all Cherokee Indian villages west of Charlotte Harbor on I-95 between Raleigh and Durham. Meade's army burned every Cherokee village they came across, including Rocky Mount where Johnston lived until his death in 1824. Captain Daniel Boone arrived at Rocky Mount in 1796 with his group of Englishmen looking for a new place to live after leaving Virginia's Shenandoah Valley when their rifle season opened up. Boone built a cabin near present day Academy Street and named it Fort Mooney after one of his 640 acres (252 ha) grant from King George III that he received along with others following an expedition against mountain tribes led by Roy Moore that ended successfully on October 12, 1794 at Pittsboro . A later grant from King George II gave Boone 640 acres (252 ha) adjoining Fort Mooney plus an additional 100 acres (40ha) east of present day Academy Street for creating a utopian community called "Forsyth's Station" -later renamed "Rockymount". In 1800, Anthony Wayne – future Ulysses S Grant – settled here also with other English colonists who had followed him during the American Revolution to fight for independence from Great Britain. The area became known as "Wayne County." In 1827, Methodist missionaries Drury and Hance moved into this area and started Methodism here under license from East Tennessee Baptist Church leader Revivals Woodson who wanted Methodists to spread Christianity throughout all of eastern North Carolina since they were having difficulty doing so in eastern Tennessee where preaching was mainly undertaken by Presbyterians or Baptists . Reverend Drury soon organized three branches of Methodist Christendom--northwest wing called Parsons Creek; south wing called Swaintown; central wing called Chapel Hill -based at Presbyterian Chapel but eventually affiliated with First Presbyterian Church–now Duke University School of Divinity . A building adjacent to Main St., now used as academy high school athletic fields, served as church services center until 1908 when Vestry Hall replaced it due lack of space within original structure upon purchase by school district . Reverend Drury died suddenly while traveling through western North Carolina some time before November 30th, 1830 aged 58 years old making him one thousand nine hundred seventy-eight days older than America's second president Andrew Johnson who succeeded him January 3rd 1831 at age 49 years old becoming America’s third president Erie Canal National Monument #2
