Salisbury is a town in Lincoln County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. Salisbury is part of the Greensboro-Winston-Salem Combined Statistical Area. It is the home of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and many other high-technology companies. The first settlers in what is now Salisbury were white farmers who arrived around 1785. They built a log cabin on a bend in the river and named it "Salisbury." In 1811, brothers Charles and George White purchased land east of downtown Salisbury from Indian traders for $1 per acre. From this purchase they developed a farming community that thrived until 1865, when Union troops burned down their barns and stores to prevent them from providing food for Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War. In 1868, Salisbury's post office was established; it continued to serve until 1907. In 1865 General Jubal Early visited Salisbury while campaigning against Robert Easley in neighboring Avery County; he was so impressed with its thriving farm economy that he ordered his army to encamp there for three months before moving on to nearby Abbeville. In 1901, an act by the General Assembly designated Salisbury as the county seat of Lincoln County; it remained so until 1966 when Greenville became county seat because more people lived in Greene County then in Lincoln County. As well as being county seat, SALISBURY had courtrooms (1866), jail (1870), library (1901), fire department (1915), printing press (1917) and numerous other governmental services typical of rural counties at that time including school board meetings which were held at salisbury hall from 1861 to 1923 inclusive As stated earlier, much important technology took place here during these years including: development of UNC Chapel Hill by Dr John Waddell (1892); establishment of DuPont Company Research Laboratories adjacent to UNC Chapel Hill known as "the Triangle" or DuPont Circle complete with research reactors on campus beginning in 1929; production beginning at Peebles Paper Mill located 5 blocks south west of downtown Salisbury soon followed byUEA’s creation with major manufacturing operations taking place here beginning 1941 – all accomplished without much protest or resistance from locals save occasional shuttles betweenSalisbury Halls Campus housing developments/facilities across town while administrative offices were housed elsewhere .
