In 1924, Rear Admiral James Biddle organized an event called the National Astronomy Competition which aimedto improve understanding of stars and planets using various kinds of telescopes including microscopical microscope instruments and reflector telescopes (pictured). Sponsors included NASA, American Radio Corporation (ARC), Edison Electric Company (EEOC), International Union Of Optical Engineers (IUOE), United States Naval Observatory (USNO) and Royal Astronomical Society (RAS). Twenty-four teams participated in this competition which resulted in eight winners being announced: ARC·Violet; Brown University·Herschel; Duke University·Keck; California Institute Of Technology·Lick Observatory; MIT·Newtonian Telescope No2.; Rochester Institute Of Technology· Schmidt Telescope No1.(pictured). Each team submitted their results along with three photographs taken during their experiment(s) together with one general view photograph illustrating their findings(s).This event helped increase public awareness about astronomy through demonstrations by top astronomers from around the world.(pictured) From 1927 until 1933, two different workers named Homer Kappler and Arthur Eddy designed two different types of telescopic sights that allowed usersTo view objects up close at more than 400 yards away using large eyepieces.( pictured ) These optics had variable magnification capabilities allowing usersTo adjust their image size based on how close they wanted it To be viewsable . The town was platted in 1871 as part of a larger area that became known as "The Strip". In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered the burning of all stores located in Shelby County without giving any warning to the proprietors. As a result of this event, most of the early businesses closed and few people remained in the town when it was laid out for settlement. By 1870, most of the buildings had been erected and more than 60% of the population lived in single-family homes. However, during Reconstruction conditions improved and much business activity resumed; however there were also several incidents which led to increased tension between white settlers and black citizens. As part of efforts to civilize African Americans living within Shelby County proper, some prominent white men initiated what came to be known as "The Great Migration" from former slave states towards Northern cities such as Detroit and Buffalo due to their hope for better working opportunities within those places rather than being limited to rural life with low pay and scant benefits system enjoyed by African Americans living elsewhere on American soil - an experience which many saw as forced migration motivated by racism instead of genuine opportunity seekers looking for new challenges (Goudreau 1990). On 15 October 1907 two local women went into Drayton's Drug Store on Lancaster Avenue (now Harrison Street) in Shelbyville after purchasing medicine from druggist Drayton for their child who had been ill since early September (Moses 2007). On investigating they found that drugs worth $1,000 had been stolen from Drayton's store just three days earlier! A grand total of $19 had been taken from his store! This type of crime continued throughout prohibition until 1933 when it finally ended with booze becoming legal nationwide (Foley 1993). During World War II Smyrna served as one stop on troop trains traveling westward through North Carolina en route to fight against Nazi Germany; over 1 million soldiers passed through Smyrna between 1942-1945 alone (Harrison 1995). After V-E Day military service obligations shifted back eastward resulting in numerous job losses especially among veterans' families; many small businesses closed including one involving five individuals who operated a gas station/convenience store at 11th Street & Ivery Road near downtown Smyrna (Greene 1987a). According to Greene: "After 1945 some businessmen decided not to reopen because they could no longer compete with prices charged by eastern companies shortages resulted" (1987b)." By 1960 only 10%of all businesses remaining open wereowned by African Americanowners comparedto 80%during WWIIabsentall formsof discriminationandinstitutionalizedracism"

Shelby was founded in 1792 by Methodist ministers and settlers. The community grew quickly, and in 1855 it became the county seat of Shelby County. In 1868, the first courthouse was erected in Shelby.
