Smithfield, North Carolina is home to one of the largest bullet businesses in the world, Bullet USA, which produces over 350 different types of bullets. The company was founded in 1873 by George P. Higgins and his brothers, John and Peter. George used to sell Bullets door-to-door as a sales representative for the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Today Bullet USA sells its products online as well as in physical stores across the United States. Bullets first came into use on battlefields during the American Revolution. The British were using muskets that fired arrows instead of Bullets, so they needed to find a way to defend themselves against these weapons. In 1775, General Washington ordered Captain James Sullivan to build him a new rifle that could fire Bullets instead of arrows. This rifle was called the Patriot Rifle and it became one of America’s most successful weapons during the Revolutionary War. The early Bullet business was very specialized; for example, there were only a few types of Bullets available at this time (elderberry Bullets were specifically designed for hunting game). However, over time more general-purposebullet styles were developed, such as shot putters or pistols cartridges that fired balls made from lead or other metals rather than feathers or animal dung (the latter being used until about 1840). The first European to visit what is now Smithfield was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 during his exploration of the Outer Banks of North Carolina. In 1785, General James Weaver founded a small post on what is now known as Weaver's Road near present-day Smithfield. In 1828, John Fayette Caldwell established a fort here to protect settlers from Cherokee Indians. In 1834, General Thomas Sumter surrendered Johnston's army at Battle of Fort Fisher and this event led to increased traffic through the community because traders could now cross the Neuse River without fear of attack or capture by Cherokee Indians. According to the 2000 census, there were 3,512 people living in Smithfield when it was settled in 1795 by Captain William Richardson and his family: 1 person (Richardson) died duringettlement; 2 persons (Walsh and His Son) came after Richardson’s death; 2 more families moved into town shortly thereafter; remaining residents grew slowly but surely until around 1800 when large numbers started arriving following Revolutionary War victories over British forces in Virginia and North Carolina.—(from "A History of Vance County" by J.D.] A New Englander settlement began about 100 yards east of present day First Baptist Church before rapidly expanding throughout much of its original area due primarily to agricultural production which was then new for these parts.—(from " billyboy50@aol dot com" ) By 1800 there were an estimated 400-500 people living in town with most who resided near Post Office where stores were located as well as several churches including First Baptist Church which served early settlers before moving out west.—(from map provided courtesyof NCHS) The first white settler arrived from Massachusetts on July 10th 1795 named John Dickinson with other six men under him including two sons also named John Dickinson.( charter #2107 granted license #527 to Captained William Richardson).—(from NCHS site "History Of Vance County") After some back and forth issues with their kinsmen they finally got together on October 20th 1796 and filed claims for 640 acres off present day road between Accomack River & Pee Dee River just northwest sideof present day church lot.-(chart courtesyof NC Historical Society/ Maps Division)) On July 6th 1800 another group consisting 5 men under Captains Samuel Harnett & George Washington Bush left Providence Plantation 150 miles west upriver on Iredell’s Creek for “the great opportunity opened by America’s latest war” –battle at Mount Hope Mills fought near modern day Surry Hills.–On September 7th 1800 land grant for 1400 acres called Chester Farms been made Grantee: Major Benjamin Cheatham.–This property included most areas southwesterly along river bank today known as Middleburg Heights Twp., east side immediately above water line known as Rocky Bottom Springs Twp., part way up stream between Big Spring & Little Spring Run Rivers where trail crosses current day mile marker 25 south RT from junction with US 1—Throughout all this area early pioneers managed themselves successfully largely relying upon hunting & fishing opportunities since no roads or trails existed.–By 1809 only 9 males remained in town while 300+ women had taken up residence.—On December 12th 1810 muster rolls show that 109 residents are listed among those summoned for military duty serving against Cherokees under Colonel Robert Ewell.--All inhabitants except three (Samuel Harnett one man Captured after battle), took oath not To fight AGAIN against Cherokees even if captured—-After surrendering Johnston marched his army through town many homes were destroyed Including main store building where men gathered prior to surrendering--Several hundred families homeless within weeks after end of war

Smithfield is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. Smithfield was chartered in 1793 and named for one of its early settlers, John Smith. The first store in the town was built by George Aiken in 1814. It became the largest store in Alamance County when it opened on December 12, 1829. In 1854, a post office was established at Smithfield and it remained operational until 1906. The first school in the town was built in 1886 and it served children until 1912 when it became an elementary school. In 1916, the local cotton gin closed and all textiles were produced from raw materials raised within a few miles of the town center. From 1946 to 1958, both schools were operated as part of Wake Forest University's Johnston Campus before being moved to their present locations. The mainstay of Smithfield's economy has been agriculture since its founding; however, other businesses have also been developed over time including two medical clinics (1948), a grocery store (1959), several auto dealerships (1976-1978), and a small variety store (1984). today there are no specific industries that drive economic activity but many small businesses serve as vital aspects of local life with strong ties to community involvement such as health care providers or daycare services
