Smithfield is a town in Avery County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Durham–Carrboro–Chapel Hill metropolitan area. Smithfield is located on the eastern edge of Avery County and is bordered by Uptown Chapel to the east, Chapel Hill to the north, and Carrboro to the northwest. The town was named for General Simon Smith (1746-1820), a Virginian Revolutionary War hero who fought in Canada and then joined General Andrew Jackson's army during the Mexican-American War. General Smithfield had his plantation near what is now downtown Smithfield developed into a large mill village called "Hamlet". On December 5th 1836, John Randolph (1784-1864), an advocate for slavery in North Carolina and one of the leading figures in its development as a slave state, married Martha Neely (1787-1859). That same year Randolph met with representatives from General James Robertson's brigade which was quartered at Hamlet to discuss purchases of slaves within that community. This meeting led to Randolph developing strong feelings about white supremacy and abolitionism and he became involved in local politics as a result. In 1840 he ran unsuccessfully for election as Avery County sheriff against incumbent John Easton. In 1847 or 1848 General James Robertson set up shop northeast of what is now downtown Smithfield using land he acquired from some Native Americans who had been forced onto his farm when they were displaced by settlers from nearby Carrboro. The new business operated successfully until it burned down on November 10th 1849 leaving Robertson stranded with no means of repairs or subsistence but also providing valuable experience for future businesses operating in that area. "From this day forward," wrote Robertson shortly after his firefighting skills were put to use efforts saving many lives "I am an inhabitant of this place." A few years later he founded another small mill but this time it failed due to competition from more recent arrivals from Carrboro - Westmoreland Mills - which started up operations just south of town along Interstate 85 just west of where Hammonds Road crosses I-85 today; making it possible for drivers on I-85 southbound between Raleigh/Durham and Chapel Hillto see both demolition sites across their right shoulders intermittently over their stay thereabouts." In 1853, Smithfield was founded by James A. Smith and his family. The town grew rapidly after the production of pork products began in the area in the 1830s. By 1860, Smithfield had a population of over 2,000 people. In 1865, the first cotton gin in North Carolina was built in Smithfield. The town continued to grow and become one of the most important economic nodes on the eastern seaboard during the 19th century. In 1876, a railway was constructed through Smithfield which made it easier to get goods to market. This led to increased business and industry withinSmithfield as well as throughout much of South Carolina and Georgia. By 1915, Smithfield had nearly reached its peak population with over 10,000 residents. However, World War I led to a decline in trade and industry withinSmithfield which caused some residents to move away for economic reasons. After World War I ended, however, Smithfields growth resumed and by 1930 there were more than 20,000 residents living in town. During this time period, many new businesses were established including a grocery store and department stores such as Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney & Co., Macy's Inc.,and Sears Tower (now known as Sears Building). In 1939-1940, due to an outbreak ofWorld War II ,the size ofthe town decreased somewhat but it still remains one of America's mostimportant textile towns .
