Southern Pines is part of the Durham-Chapel Hill Metropolitan Statistical Area. Southern Pines continued to be an important agricultural center until around 1910 when it lost most of its industry due to World War I efforts to persuaded Americans not participate in warfare abroad. However, since then there has been an increase in tourism activity due primarily to Northern Carolina's geographic location within easy reach of other major cities such as Charlotte and Raleigh.

Southern Pines became an incorporated town in 1873, and has since grown into a census-designated place (CDP). The population of Southern Pines was 20,623 as of the 2010 census.
