Southern Pines, North Carolina is a small town located in the Outer Banks of N.C. It is known for its scopes and rifle ranges, as well as its history dating back to 1814. The town was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants who came overland from Ireland in 1814. They erected a few log buildings and began trading with the local Native American tribe. In 1821, Southern Pines became part of the United States after it was purchased from Britain by President James K. Polk. The town was renamed Jacksonville in 1924 after the city in Florida that had been created nearby by a merger of two smaller villages, Jacksonville and St Augustine (now Port St Johns). The first ammunition store opened in Northern Pines in 1886, followed by a millinery shop in 1888. A post office was established here in 1896. After World War I, Southern Pines experienced an economic boom due to military production facilities located here including the U S Naval Observatory and Plantation Army Ammunition Plant. However, this prosperity ended during the Depression when defense spending curtailedoutput at these plants but continued elsewhere such as at DuPont’s Wilmington plant where munitions were produced until 1984; however DuPont eventually divested themselves of their armaments businesses within three years of taking control of Dow Chemical Co., which then merged with Monsanto to form Pharmacia/Monsanto (Pharmaceuticals) Incorporated on January 1, 1986.) In recent decades there has been steady growth both within Southern Pines itself and adjacent areas such as Jacksonville Beach thanks to new development along Interstate 95 which originally served as an access road connecting Northern and Southern Pines before being widened into what is now called "The Boulevard." This roadway provides easy access to many facilities including golf courses, shopping malls, restaurants and schools while also serving as a major route for transportation within Central NC etcetera Southern Pine residents have long enjoyed using scopes for hunting purposes since they were first devised centuries ago! In 1830 Fort Neely was established at Lopez River Beach (now called Rocky Mount) & within one year had become one of America’s most important military posts! Southern Pines soon developed into an important center for trade with both local regionals & distant points along the Atlantic seaboard. By 1840 there were 2 stores (& 3 blacksmiths) & 7 families living here; 5 men hired out as laborers on plantations near Wilmington/D Cape Fear River; 1 wagon train daily traveled between Fort Neely& Wilmington via Spanish Point Ferry across NC Bayou St John [now Elizabeth City] to New Bern then downriver to Charleston; 300 lbs burden @ $1 per day wagons only transported 2 yds total distance In 1865 Confederate General Robert E Lee decided that rather than surrender their capital Richmond they would instead retreat south through Georgia towards Macon County where they could be safe from Union forces under United States President Abraham Lincoln who believed that any Confederate soldiers remaining in northern Virginia should be surrendered unconditionally! As result of this decision Confederate General Jubal Early made his way northward through western Tennessee before being intercepted by Union troops at Appomattox Court House outside Petersburg Junction ON April 9th 1865!!! Aftermath: Over 60% killed or captured…..many found refuge inside surrounding Mountains
