Arbors were built to keep fish from eating away at the roots of trees near where Tarboro now stands. The first European to visit Tarboro was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 when he called it "Tarraco." The town was founded by white men around 1775 as an agricultural community for slaves brought over from Africa. At first, only men worked in the fields; later, women and children joined in the labor force as well. By 1830, there were enough residents to form a board of trustees for their new village center which they named Cedar Grove after nearby Cedar Hill plantation where many free African Americans lived. In 1835, tarps were put up to shade homes during hot summer days so that locals could come outside and work on their farms instead of staying inside all day long! During Reconstruction following the American Civil War, Tarboro became an importantsymbolof Southern Progressivism because black people here generally enjoyed more civil rights than other Southerners did at that time . For many years thereafter, Tarboro functioned as a haven for white Republicans who wantedto send a signal to Northerners that they too could be part of America's “Great Republic” while maintaining ties with their former Confederate masters. After General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in 1865, many slaveholders decided this wasn't such a great place after all and moved away or sold their property back into private hands – leaving behind some impressivelookingtarrocks still standing today !!

Tarboro is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white people to live in Tarboro were farmers who came from Scotland in 1825 and 1830. In 1847, Colonel John Sevier bought land near Tarboro and started to build a mill on the Rappahannock River. The mill became known as Sevier's Mill because it was run by that colonel and his family. In 1865, General Jubal Early built a fortification at White Sands Hill to protect against possible Union attacks on Gaston County during the Civil War. The fortifications were abandoned after Confederate forces destroyed them in 1865. In 1870, Reverend James Fenton built Presbyterian church on what is now Main Street in Tarboro. Fenton also founded Aiken School District No. 8 which included Tarboro High School (now UNC-Chapel Hill). In 1872, Reverend Wm Hargrave erected an Episcopal church on what is now West Broad Street in what was then Anson County. The first school in Tarboro was called Anson Academy whichgrades students from one to twelve years old and opened for instruction on September 12th,1872 by Rev Elisha Graham Freshman of Chapel Hill Female Seminary under the direction of Professor Jno Suggs (1801-1871), afterwards third Principal of Pembroke College (now University of Pembroke)Hargrave being second PrincipalElisha Graham being first
